So a customer brought in his truck complaining of a strange noise at idle and when revved up to about 1400-1600 rpm. So we start checking all the pulleys on the motor, thay all check out fine. So we pull the water pump out and everything looks fine. We are stumped so with just the balancer and the water pump reinstalled we start the truck and listen very carefully and the noise is coming from behind the cover. I remove the front cover and this is what I find. The oil pump gear teeth are hammered. Only gear that is messed up. The truck only has 89, 000 miles on it.

Here is some pics of the gear. I figured I would share this in case anyone else has this problem.

Hmmm... What did it sound like? I had a weird ass noise on my lbz last summer and could not locate the source. It would only do it when then engine was good and hot, it was intermittent though. Then it stopped. I heard that same weird noise again about a month ago.

How was the oil pressure before you found the pump gear damaged?

Oil pressure was a typical duramax pressure this noise was constant no matter the temperature. It honestly sounded like a turbo surge or my boss said it was like the three stoges were in there.
