thought i would share my little problem with yall so yall could possibly check yalls steering...

While i was in dallas this weekend with my gf we were goin down the highway coming up to a curve when i lost all steering at 75mph!!! and slammed in to a concrete wall with no shoulder lane. After that an 18wheeler allmost slammed into the back of us!!!!

turns out my steering shaft came off the gear box????

There is a little u grove on the stud that comes out of the gear box that the bolt on the steering shaft sits in when you tighten it down. It was worn out and worn down. This could have been a bad bad wreck and could have been alot worse! Plz check yalls gear back stud and make sure it is not worn down

Sorry to hear about it. At least you both are okay and thank you for puttingthis up as it'll likely prevent it from happening to someone else...on a side note how's the truck?

the truck well i dont know how but when we smahed in to the wall it caught the driver front tire first kicking it out and keeping the body of the truck away from the wall!!!! i have a scratched rim and very little damage!!! i mean very little. like i said this could have been way worse!! the truck was trying to go over the wall but wouldnt thank the lord for that! a new gear box is being put on as we speak! just got lucky for both our safety and the truck! the 18wheeler locked up all brakes and i saw him coming thro the side mirror and i just grabbed my girl and waited!! he slid into the other lane hitting one car and missed us my inches... so plz guys just check them out when you can

anyone have an idea on why or how the shaft would just pop off like that with the bolt still in it. besides the groove being worn down?

Damn dude, that sounds like it could have been WAY worse. Glad you 2 are okay. Trucks are metal and can be fixed but it's a little tougher to fix people.

I'm having a hard time visualizing what happened. The shaft went out of round and somehow it came off the steering box shaft, even though the bolt is still in place? Sorry for the stupid question.

thanks guys! and yea it came off the steering box shaft with the bolt still in place on the steering shaft???? no idea what or why it would have been pulled that hard in order for it to come off since the steering box is mounted to the frame:confused:

So I gave this a few more seconds of thought. Has that part EVER been romoved from the truck? Maybe the bolt was never put in the hole on the box in the first place. It could have been slid on the shaft and the bolt placed in the hole but never actually ran down far enough on the steering box to couple them together. Maybe your truck was built on a Friday or Monday? I think mine was sometimes. Just thinking out loud here.

Kinda sounds like it was never installed properly to begin with. I replaced mine so I know it's on correctly. Might be something people can check if they are under the hood someday. Thanks for posting this.
