I got a 03 lbz duramax with about 180k. I recently replaced starter, the new worked for about 5 starts now it wont work at all, i tried jumper cables and tapping the starter but still wont work. The solenoid wire gets real hot. Its activating and sounds like its locked up or something.

Did you check to see if the engine is HydroLocked?

Might want to pull the glow plugs and see if there is any liquid in any of the cylinders.

I would try rotating the motor over by the balancer bolt. That will let you know if the motor is locked up, or something is wrong with the starter. If the motor is locked up, then do what jlawles2 said and pull the glow plugs. With them out, rotate it slowly by hand and see what comes out.

Ahh ok ill have to try that thanks
Do yall know if on the starter the small postive post is supposed to be loose on the regulator at all, because that whole piece moves around?

No, none of the posts are supposed to be loose. I busted one of the posts loose on the starter solenoid when I built my motor, and it wouldn't work right after that. I ended up throwing a new solenoid on (which is harder than it sounded), and all is well. So maybe there is a problem with the solenoid.

If the motor isn't locked up, I'd take the starter to a shop to have it tested. There are some subtle ways the Duramax starter can be put together wrong so it looks right, but won't work.

Not the starter

Sorry its been awhile but i figured out it was not the starter the cylinder was leaking coolant into it. I figured head gaskets so i ordered them. When i tore the head apart the gaskets had little damge.
The driver side though had a bad valve and the head had damage on it, as well as the #8 piston with a indent in it. I got it machined but it looks like the injectors were replaced before, could it have been a bad injector seal??

Could have been an injector cup, bad headgasket, all of the above. The cups have o-rings, and have to be locktited (this is a special high temp red locktite and both the heads and cups needs to be uber clean).

I've had to go back in after dealer monkeys did not lube the o-rings and essentially destroyed every o-ring on the cups.

Did you do a compression test before you pulled the heads? It is possible the rods bent when the piston came up and stopped on the liquid.

Yea i replaced both head gaskets, cleaned cups up and added new o rings put locktite on as well. I had to get the driver side milled it had warp marks and small chips. No cracks though.
Im just wondering if a piece of something got in there to chip the top of the one piston...very weird and i replaced one of the valves
