My starter started grinding intermittently. I'm assuming it's time to replace it, but is there anything I should rule out first? Batteries and less then a year and it was doing it some before replacing them. There doesn't seem to be any shimming that can be done.

I'm happy with the life I got out of this starter, but are the HD Gear reduction starters worth the money? Looks like a Mean Green is $420, but XPD has their own brand for $280 too.

It’s probably not kicking the bendix out hard enough due to sticking or galling

Just double check the ring gear isn’t getting torn up. It will do that

Has anyone ever taken apart 1of these starters to try and clean the bendix? I asked my dad about it since Ive never done it, but if it was built after 1990 he's over his head. I was just curious its something that's not too bad to do or if you needed to have special tools.
