Spare tire release broken, help!

Today I went to do some rust removal work underneath the bed of my 2006 Chevy 2500HD LBZ and needed to remove the spare tire sling underneath to do so. To release it, you must use the joint rod that goes into the tube with a key locked cover. Well I was having hell getting it undone, when I released it was because the tube had broken off where it connected to the spare tire. I need to fix this before I have a REAL problem where I need to!

How do I remove the tire now?

Should still be able to use the rod to remove the tire, the tube is just a guide to the relese mechanism, line the rod up and turn.Have had several like this in the body shop and they are a pita even when they work properly, soak the $hit out of it with penetrant oil.

If you have smallish arms you can reach through the spare tire rim and remove the bolt that holds the bracket to the crossmember. After pulling the bolt it takes several minutes of cussing and prying to work the tab out of the crossmember then the tire and bracket all come out at once. It's a bitch, but that's how I had to remove mine.

Hell, mine went and rusted up this past winter. Only way to get the tire down was to cut the cable. :( Luckily, the donor truck had one that worked. :)

The lock need to be released which can be done by jacking up on the spare wheel and gtting all the pressure off the winch, then with a long screw driver you can manipulate the lock arm. It sucks you will cuss and get more shit in your than you can flush out.

Every Silverado and Dodge we have owned has this issue, I miss the way we just mounted the spares in the bed... But no room for tool boxes fuel tanks and goosenecks and tires...

A buddy of mine ended up just cutting his off and hauling the tire in the bed. Everything was so rusted up that it wasn't worth trying to save.

if you really want to keep the carrier setup, you need to remove that brass colored tab that acts as a safety stop. If you google it, you will find some DIY's. Yet another failure put out by GM that was never corrected via recall.
