I'm not much of a snowmobile guy but I do know the Powersports sides of things and that seems like a pretty good deal! Only thing I would suggest is make sure there is an Artic cat dealer in his area because I know there is not a whole lot left for getting parts and help with issues and what not...

What type of riding does your brother plan on doing? Hill climbing in back country? Trail riding? Or does he has hopes of racing? If it's mainly trail riding, I'd opt for something a little less tuned up, or you might end up stranded unless you have some skills with those carbs and reeds.

I've been riding off and on for years. My (ex)wife used to race Sno-Cross and we all free rode with those racers. Sleds like that are rockets, but they require constant tuning. '99 chassis with an '04 hood means it's been banged up a bit early on and probably rolled a few times. Not necessarily a horrible thing, I've rolled mine a few times and the hoods do get damaged, but this unit probably has some hard miles or was raced.

For $2K though, you're not out too much cash for a fun toy. Just expect to be playing with the carbs every few hundred miles.

Thanks guys. It will be farm fields and trails but mainly straight line running. He has a 833 hp cummins so hes all about speed and acceleration which this thing should have plenty of both! I told him it was probably rolled which is why it has new plastics but we are going to go drive it tonight and see how it handles. Ill tell him about the carbs. The problem is neither of us knows the first thing about adjusting carbs.....

It would be fun for screwing around on or racing. But if u want to do any trail riding it wouldn't be ideal. And u would probly want to carry 2-3 sets of good spark plugs with you all time, any guys I know that have cats I've rode with eat through plugs.

Id skip on it, but thats just me. In my experience previously modded toys almost always turn into a headache for the new owner. For that price Im sure you/he could find a newer stock f7 or f8 if you wanted arctic cat. And 155 horse isnt anything for a "mod sled". My stock skidoo made that from the factory..

I would personally pass on buying this sled for a couple of reasons. First, the sled is highly molested from its original form. With snowmobiles there is a point that you modify it to far and then the reliability of the machine declines exponentially. You no longer take the sled out for a fun days ride, you take the sled out to "test & tune". The price seems high for the amount customization this sled has received. She is an old dinosaur that will need her share of attention in the near future. If its to romp around the farm then by all means you could walk home if it broke and this sled would be fine. Secondly, the price seems high for a 99 chassis because at the end of the day that's what the title is going to say a 1999 something.
My opinion is based on a back county mountain rider in the west which reliability is very important along with maneuverability of sled. I did a quick search on my local ads and there is a 2004 Arctic Cat 900 EFI 151" track going for 2100. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=27834561&cat=146&lpid=8&search=&ad_cid=8

Here is the used snowmobile page. Theses are located in a Utah and are mountain sleds so that could contribute to the overall price difference, but it gives you an idea http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=231&cat=146&category=142&pid=8&o_facetSelected=false.

Run away quick unless you are prepared to do a lot of wrenching. Not saying that will be 100% the case with this particular sled but having worked in a sled shop and ridden them for over 25yrs, typically a mod sled is going to be a headache especially one this old. They almost always have been ridden beyond hard and are usually sold when they are used up. As others have said, look for a good low mileage completely stock machine, there are lots of good ones out there. :thumb:

For one, it's set up for too specific of riding, second, it's set up, you don't know how or by who and neither of you are familiar with these machines....

Not a first time buyer sled, or a my "only" sled kinda sled

This sled would be like finding one of Dimitri Millard's trucks on Craigslist as a built motor truck...could you imagine the excitement you'd have reading through one of his mods lists, you're a perspective buyer new to the scene, sittin on CL gettin all geeked about this "incredible truck" and buy it, Only to find out months later....oh shit....this was Dimitri Millard's truck

Pass. As many things like it, as it's modded it essentially decreases it's value.

Sleds are reliable, but not reliable like the new ones are. The more you do, the more unreliable they are.

I'm a ski doo guy by heart, they're new etechs have proven themselves time and time again. I would look for an 04-06 ski doo

Thanks for all the opinions guys! It will be just a romp around the farm machine. We live in southern MD so we don't get that much snow but he was hoping to be able to take it out to Oakland and ride trails on the weekends a couple times a winter. Too unreliable for that?

Well, the chances of you having a problem with this sled over a bone stock one are infinite.

You might get back with the original owner and ask him how he usually tuned the carbs and reeds, since he should be used to it. A number of things will make the sled act differently; temperature, humidity, quality of gas (it probably likes aviation fuel), and particularly altitude if you do any riding in mountains.

Learn how to tune it before you go back country anywhere. Never ride alone in the back country just in case you do stall out and can't get restarted. Even just a couple mile walk in knee deep snow is a real bitch, and you can get 20 miles out in 20 minutes. Keep a tow strap on it and learn how to remove the clutch belt so it can be towed.

There's also a small art to getting a sled unstuck when you bury it in deep snow. When you run across some experienced riders ask them how. You gotta get fresh snow under the track.

And then... Have a Blast!!!

That's not a D@d motor its a Hooper 711 kit that 600 motor uses the same exact pistons my ice racer does (1108 Hoopoer). He makes awesome performance motors and there is no reason it cant be reliable, the only thing that concerns me is that motor uses single ring pistons and it will need to be reringed on a seasonal basis or sooner depending on how much riding he does. The newer body parts is probably because he was trying to update the hood and belly pan to keep it looking more current IMO.Enjoy the sled those were an a great snowmobile and for 2000 for all the parts on it he could part it out and make money on it.
