Hey guys can someone point me in the right direction to try and eliminate a problem I am having at idle when engine is cold . First thing in morning , temp has to be below 70 or so my truck smokes like hell and then gradually gets better as the truck warms up . After the first initial firing is does not do this the rest of the day. With that being said , throughout the day it always has a strong diesel smell . It's so bad the wife wont even ride in the truck anymore . I need help finding what tables to mess with. Thanks guys

I would guess adjust youre pilot injection and iat tables preportionately, but im extremely new to tuning. Im sure someone with greater knowledge will chime in soon. Its definitely an IAT table problem if it only does it when cold.

How are balance rates? What fuel pressure are you running at idle? What compression ratio are you running on your motor?

Yeah it's done it since the new motor and I guess since compression has changed to 15:5 it's all out of whack

Josh I checked the balance rates at idle and there are three injectors that are showing + 3.60 to 3.80 bouncing around. I called Greg at Exergy about it and he said to check with tuning. Injectors have less than 5k on them. He said that from the paperwork he had on file about them they all checked out when they left him. I am just so confused

Also wanna add that it has done this since day one of the built motor , even when I had the stock injectors in it for a little while because my 60's where not ready at the time.

It's more than likely caused by your lower compression ratio. My truck did it too with the first built motor. I was running closer to 15:1 and only 40% injectors. It would white smoke when started cold, but it didn't do it until temps were down closer to the 50s. On the second motor I raised the CR to closer to 16.5:1 and upped the injectors to 80%, and it idled perfectly clean.

What kind of rail pressure are you running at idle and what timing?

It should be B0909 most of the time, but you will not usually see exactly what is in that table. There are multipliers that can change it a little either direction. If you have a log that shows cold idle, that would be the easiest way to see exactly what rail pressure and timing you're getting.

Ya im fighting this as well fresh motor build cut lb7 pistons should be around 16-1 comp ratio at least thats what i asked for with exergy injectors little ones to only 15% over stock not sure why the hell there giving me grief (if any) greg and harvey said they were perfect when they left there. I have one running around a -4.00 balcne rate and two others around +/-3.50 very frustrating

Could the rings nit be seated enough yet i didnt have this problem before on my motor but just a random thought

Lower compression tends to want to smoke while cold. I wouldn't be that worried about it if it's done it since day 1 and the injectors have checked out fine. Just my $.02
