Smoke testing for a boost leak?

So I'm looking for opinions on this approach to finding a boost leak. Would using a evap smoke leak tester on the charging system work? What do y'all think? Maybe making a plug in the intercooler boot with a hold for the evap machine and running the smoke trough it?

This is all you need. Unhook boost tube off of turbo and put the plug in. Pressurize to 20 psi or so and listen for leaks. $4 at home depot.

shouldnt you have to plug the other end? when i do it at work i plug both ends and one of the plugs had a fitting in it for and air pressure regulator.

Make sure to clamp it off, at 20 psi when it shoots out it sounds like a gunshot. Scared the sh*t out of me.

For some reason when I was pressure testing mine, there was air coming out of the exhaust on my driver side. Had me completely perplexed.

There is overlap on the Duramax cam, so if the motor stops at just the right point, you can have a cylinder with the intake and exhaust valves both open a little bit.

If that happens, you can bump the motor over and see if you get a different spot, or just plug off the exhaust too.

Why would you only pressurize to 20lbs when your turbo makes more than that? I've seen leaks show up at over 20lbs. The directions in the Kent Moore charge air kit says to test at 32lbs with a stock truck.

Hmm interesting. Mine peaks at 29 right now but I'll do 32 and see what happens. I'm doing this in search of the cause of my p0299 code :/

Used my tool I made and it works awesome. I found the lower ic boots leaking. Also when putting air in it would actually rotate the engine over haha is that normal? And yea the engine has to be just right to hold sit cause at first it was coming out the exhaust
