WhTs the typical death sentence of these engines in relation to a turbo upgrade being the cause? Or is that unanswearable

thats really a toss up. depends on the setup and your right foot. 600 on a stock lbz/lmm engine worries me but i know of plenty of guys running that power. anymore its not really bent rods thats the issue, its cracked pistons. tuning and good turbo setups have changed the bent rod issues we saw years ago. now its a matter of how long the stock pistons live under stock injectors or aftermarket ones. then there is the "broke crank scare". rods become a worry when you try surpassing 600hp or run a twin setup that you dont want detorqued. Beyond 600, you really need a good tune and id look into tuner like mark who has a sensor to watch cyl pressure to make the truck live.

Being one that has broke a crank, I can say that is my biggest fear. Bent rod or cracked piston I can live with and ussally know what to blame (ME), does not always seem to be a good reason for the crank.

Most cracked cranks at low HP tends to have the crank dowel pin sheared, which in turns throws timing +/-90° as the crank reluctor wheel is not aligned with the crank
harmonic balancer bolt is TTY, ARP makes new balancer bolts.

Dowel pin is more for alignment vs driving the balancer, and oil pump gear, which has the crank reluctor wheel attached to it.. it's shear clamping force that drives everything vs 5mm dowel pin
I'm pretty sure that's what cause the crank to brake on my engine #2 was not enough clamp force on the balancer bolt

Mines good so far lol.

Is a keyed crank sufficient mitigation at my lower end of the power levels or is there a better answer to that one? here i was thinking i could keep my focus on turbos

you can also get the stg2r and only run it on tune 4 as max. Lots of cool air for 550'ish hp instead of the factory hairdryer. Of course that'd kinda be like having Scarlett Johannson in your bed but not getting more than a handjob, for fear of a sudden ending. err something like that.

Wally I'm on cape cod. And that's one hell of an offer that I might just take you up on. Appreciate it. Not sure when I'm headed to jersey (that's where you're at right?) but I'll find a reason to get down there.

Yup - NJ. Anytime after April 15th! Hell, we'll take a test spin to my range and waste a couple hours obliterating tin cans, just because. LOL.

Josh - can't hurt. Unless someone can point out a generally negative aspect?

OK, my other buddy said he'll go in 1/3rds too. I'll put something together after the 15. Damn, I need to go reload more ammo now. LOL:roflmao:
