Honestly, it's real easy to go from just changng head gaskets to changing rods and pistons, allign boring, etc....:D
My Advice:
If you plan to keep it under 600 hp and that's it, the LBZ rods will work fine. Don't unbolt anything you don't have to. Throw in a set of head studs and throw it back together and you should be fine.
If you want to go with more down the road, then you may as well allign bore and balance it, throw in a good set of rods and cast pistons like de-lipped stock LB7/LLY's, key the cam and crank and stud it.

Ya and I'd pull it to swap the HG's in an '01. You may want to think about doing injectors while your in there as they are a dirty skank to change in the truck.

finally got everything tore down on the motor. I did find which side it was, driver side, back cylinder number 5. I guess the way these gaskets are made you cannot really tell where or if you had a blow out.......... I can also see where people have trouble with getting dirt into the top of the injectors....... Im hoping very little machineing will be needed and I can get my gaskets on order 2morrow......

On a side note, is there anywhere on the net you can get torque specs for the top end of the motor?

I'd also recommend getting your gaskets, etc. from Creatures of The Night Performance (member "ripmf666" ). Henry knows what it takes and you won't be getting a bunch of stuff you don't need. Prices are right also.

The Duramax is 2,4,6,8 driver side and 1,3,5,7 passenger side :thumb:

sorry bout that, I was talking to my dmax buddy thats a tech, he told me the same thing, Im not use to counting all the way to 8 working on a diesel............:D

But now Ive run into another small promblem, I got the buggy infront of the horse per say, I ordered all my gaskets at gm today, then I took my heads to the machine to be checked for cracks, I get a call from them at the end of day and said the head checked out fine but,,,,,,, Where the muilt layer blew, it let the metal ring around the cylinder beat into the head, now I have a nice little groove in the head....... By how bad it is, We think its going to take at least 0.10" to get the groove out..... Now we talked about it, I could shave the one head, and order one thicker gasket and balance the motor out, sence the other head is fine...... What should I do? I dont really want to have to reorder both gaskets, also can you cut the head that much with out resetting the valves?

The more i work on this thing the more questions I have.....

you need to do a piston protrusion test before you can get an answer on what gasket would be needed after you take .10 off , what grade gasket was the one you pulled off ? I see no reason you cant just re-order the 1 gasket .....

Is it really a groove that is a tenth of an inch deep? That's huge as far as "scratches" in engine parts go. Hopefully its more like just 0.01" or one hundredth or ten thousandths of an inch?

Regardless, you should be able to buy head gaskets individually to get whichever size you need. Think there's only three and I don't think there's a tenth of inch difference between the thinnest and thickest. Memory is failing me there though.

Good luck

Yea I talked to the machine shop again today and they are saying somwhere between eight to tenth thousands, needs to come off. I went and looked at the head, it has a good ring in it, you can hook your finger nail in it, but like I said, I guess it came from the metal ring beating it from compression. Both my gaskets were "A" models that came off my motor.

well, there's a BIG difference in 8-10 thousandths and 1 tenth like what you initially posted. :D i figured you really meant thousandths though. I'd imagine that's do-able but hopefully the smart ones on here can verify that for you. Or maybe you could put a call in to Guy at SoCal Diesel or Curtis at Diesel Performance Research. Either one should be able to answer that question pretty quickly and easily I'd imagine. ;)

Good luck

Well after taking a break and pushing alot of snow, im back in the shop working on the dmax, I have the heads on and the studs in, my question is when torquing the studs, how many steps do you make till you get to 125.
I know the bolts, are a four step but that has degree steps.
