Ok so I have an ongoing problem that gets worse. It started out I had my truck on lope/smoke tune and got on it hard and it put out a small puff of white smoke and Idk if it was wastegate chatter or what but it chirped a few times and started whistling louder. And it would only boost to 28 pounds. The egts don't EVER get over 1000 even when I give it hell and try to make them go up.
So I figured a boost leak. I did a boost test plugged intake and put about 20 pounds to it and it didn't have any leaks.
So I checked the wastegate to be stuck open. Idk if you should be able to move the wastegate lever by hand but I couldn't get it to move. I took my boost valve out and plugged it thinking if it was stuck open it would force it closed.
after plugging it I got on it and the Turbo chirped at 28 pounds and it seemed to fix it. Put the boost valve back on and it and it boosts to 32 like it did to begin with.
so this morning went out got in my truck and started down the road noticed it is whining extremely loud and it wont boost over 22 pounds now. I have replaced the fuel filter and it didn't help with the egts. So about an hour ago I decided I was going to rip the Turbo out and see what was up. I got about half way from getting it out and realized actually how much of a pain in the ass it is to get out with the coolant line coming out the bottom. So I stopped and figured I should post a thread and see what anyone has to say before I get too far along. Any ideas? And if I decide to put an aftermarket one on in the future or now does anyone recommend a certain one to get? Its a street truck but I want something nasty and I want Ball bearing.

does it have shaft play? thats where i would start with it, check the side to side and in and out play. some (very little) is acceptable you will obviously know if it is bad, also spin it by hand to see if it spins freely.

Frankly, quit with the smoke/lope tunes. Ive wondered if those kinds of tunes can make the turbo momentarily stop/bark when at idle/just off idle...not so much you'd notice it but enough to hurt the turbo.
I dont know enough about tuning to know if that is the case, but it sure seems plausible.

Curious as to just how much heavy-footing you normally do and how many miles are on the truck? Could be that the turbo just wore out.

I'm sorry you don't understand lope smoke and actually I don't know it to well myself. I just know on this tune at an idle only it LOPES as in a cammed dragster or something it makes the whole truck moves and shake like one. At about 1000rpm it quits loping and smokes like crazy.

yep she is done! a little more info on the other turbo would help, there are many different variables that could make that 64 a good one or a not so good one, but honestly after you spend the 1k on the turbo and the rest on the adapter stuff to make it work you might as well have just bought a new kit from one of the guys here!:thumb:

You shouldve stopped while you were ahead, now you get to look into getting the intercooler flushed, and everything cleaned out. Get rid of the smoke and lope tunes, probably not what hurt your turbo, but they are most defenatly diesel ricer $hit.:thumb:

Man sorry to hear this. What are your plans for the truck in the future? This will help you decide what turbo is best for you. There's a lot of choices out there.

Well i no where a Built scheid s400 dodge turbo is that all you would need is a adaptor for the exhaust housing:) lol its nasty as hell

Its a nasty turbo wit billet wheels and new rebuild wit bout three tanks of fuel ran threw it and will sell it for like 1000 cash probably and the adaptor you can buy from most diesel performance shops and its a mega super huge scheid turbo which are super strong and very reliable

that turbo is i mega built 64Mm s400 and it a sick as hell turbo it will do like 70Psi plus.

its a holset housin that has been machined to fit the mega shaft s400 turbo for quick spooling and stock appearin till you see the compressor wheel and exhaust housin

Its a custom built scheid special seriously. and wit a automatic it wouldn't take that long to spool. but if you want to go faster or bigger its gonna be a lil laggy compared to stock small turbo. but when it hits its gonna be so nasty

Those are the texts he sent me that's all I know about it right now and its still on the kids truck. Its I either I get this one and save a few maybe or wait a few months and buy one of those precision 67mm from trent or someone on here

You are aware that turbo will not make that kind of boost mounted to a Duramax... and boost is not indicative of horsepower by any means.
