Just had the tail shaft extension replaced in my truck, I got my tranny back in and went to drive it, threw an engine light, tech 2 said shift solenoid e is stuck....I'm just curious how difficult it is to repair that. Trucks an 02 gmc bone stock, has newer tcase, and 167k on it. I just spent about 1600 and I'm still without a truck. it has all new fluid, and new spin on filter....the magnet on the filter looked like it had never seize on it so I'm kind of nervous, but it shifted fine before the housing broke

Drop the valve body and inspect it for debris and/or damage in the bore. The E shift valve is very picky. Clean valve body an apply a good assembly lube to the valves and check to makes sure it slides freely in the bore. If it does, then reassemble making sure to tighten the valve body no more than 9ft lbs or you risk crushing the bores causing many more issues.

If you still have problems, sonnex makes a reamer for the bore and new spring you can try.

Other than that, you may need a new valve body. Do not sand the valve, you will ruin it.

Was the extension housing replace with the Allison still in the truck? The E shift solenoid is not sticking; it's the E shift valve that's stuck due to some kind of debris floating around inside.

I took the tranny out and brought it to a shop to replace the housing. It's making a pretty loud bang when it first engages though. It just seems like it won't shift into over drive and when you first game off t feels like a slip almost

I think we have a problem here. I bet they did it horizontally on a bench. If so, you have trouble. Stop driving it and pull the pan for inspection.

I only put about 20 miles on it, I'm dropping the pan tomorrow....anything specific I should look for?

There will either be none, or a lot!! Been there done that! All the metal coming from the fallen Torrington bearing is prob what is causing e valve to stick.

So I just dropped my pan, nothing out of the ordinary metal wise, and the fluid is still nice and clean. I checked out the wiring and there are no breaks internally. Not sure which solenoid is the one I want to take out though, and a couple of them were hot to the touch, not sure if that's normal or what

The solenoid is not your problem as mike stated.. It's a stuck shift valve.. If your not 100% confident in your mechanical abilities then put the pan back on and take it somewhere. (Just my $.02)

I would stop what Im doing right now if I were you. You may have caught it before you completely trashed the trans.

First thing Monday morning, call the trans shop and ask them their procedure when they replaced the tailshaft. If they say, "Propped it up" or "On the bench" then you can then go from there on diagnosing what the issue is.

Keep in mind, MikeL has forgotten more about these Allisons than most of us know, so if he says its one thing, you can bet it probably is.

With no metal in the pan you prob just need to remove the valve body and split it in half and clean/deburr the E valve and its bore. If they had let the Torrington bearing fall when they replaced the housing you would see lots of metal in the pan.

I've got some play in the rear most gear pack, never had an Allison apart so I'm not sure if there is an allowable spec or not. The e valve was a little tough coming out but I didn't see any burs in the housing. Got it back together and they all slide freely. I think I'm going to wait until tomorrow night after I call the transmission shop to put it back together

Not right away in certain cases.

Hi there, I have an 08 Duramax and when it is cold it throws a P0751 code Shift Solenoid (SS) 1 Valve Performance - Stuck Off. If it is inside the shop it is fine. Once it warms up it goes away!! Any ideas of what to check?

Thanks
