Anyone know for a 2006 Allison 6 speed, can the shift shaft seal be replaced without removalof the transmission? (Say shift shaft seal 3 fast a few times). Thanks for any input.

The Allison linkage seal is the same one used on all GM's. ( 400,350,700,200 TH's ) Allison has a tool set so that the seal can be replaced from the outside. It takes some practice and usualy requires about 5 ruined seals before you get one to seal. I have the tools and use them often.

Also be careful removing the old one as it is EASY to damage the shift shaft to the point it will not seal again(don't ask). Another option is to go to NAPA and buy there seal as it is a shorter design and install it along with the origanal by driving the new seal against the old one. There is enough depth to allow 2 seals to fit without them bottoming out. And I use a deep well socket for puttin g them in as I don't have the special tool set. Just find one that loosely slides over the shift shaft and is roughly the same OD as the seal.

Digging out the old seal with a screw driver almost always scratches the shaft. You are toast after that. When installing new seal from the outside; Tap the seal lightly and evenly or it will distort and leak.
Here at my shop we always remove the shaft and linkage to do it properly. We run 99.9% success ratio.

Mike do you have the Kent Moore removal tool? I've used it with good success without removing the shaft.
On rebuilds I always remove the shaft to replace the seal though.

Yes I have that tool and use it for seal replacement when not rebuilding.

I figured so. Thought maybe I'd get lucky and be able to send you one for a Christmas present. Little payback for the advice and tips you've shared with me recently....

I personally like the seal used on the late LML Allison 6 speeds, PN 24256576.
We order these form the Chevy dealer and they will work on 5 speeds also. Hi Mike
