I picked up a 01 duramax two months ago and its doin something wierd going into 3rd gear. At first it only did it when it i drove it alot in one day but now its doing it everytime the tranny is up to TEMP. inbetween 2nd and 3rd it almost seems like it goes into neutral for .5 second then shifts. VERY ANNOYING because the engine revs up a little bit and it almost makes your body want to move forward. It doesnt slam into 3rd there is just a delay between those gears. Any ideas? found a thread on google were a guy had the same problem and it turned out to be a metal flake stuck somewhere. Seems very rare and i suspsect something else. I also read that these trannys have wierd quirks such as valves sticking but it seems like that would happen while cold? any ideas would help.

If the truck starves for fuel it will do this, I would check the balance rates and change the fuel filter. Does it do it all the time or under hard acceleration?

i havent changed the fuel filter since i have bougtht he truck but i will ASAP now that i think about it. Have less then 1,500 miles on injectors so it might be a good idea to change the filter. I does it under normal acceleration sometimes worse then others its annoying and embarrassing when theres passengers in the truck because it can make you move forward sometimes.
When changing the fuel filter do i just un-hookt he sensor and twist it off? then put the new filter on and prime it? or is there a bleeder screw? Sorry this is my first diesel. The truck isnt programmed yet but my buddy has some snap on scanner of some sort, would that be able to reset the TAPS? it did it with the previous injectors and the new injectors. I use to have to drive quite a ways for it to do it but now it does it as soon as the tranny gets to normal operating temps

I would change the spin on filter on the ally also, they are cheap from an allison dealer. there is a primer on top of the filter head.

My money is on a fuel filter as well. When I first got my Dmax I had this exact problem. Thought it was a transmission problem and planned for good amount of power down the road so I bought a 5k dollar transmission. After the new tranny went in the symptom was still there! One fuel filter later I was off n runnin
