I seem to have a transfer case that can't decide what gear it's in all of the sudden. It is kicking out of 4x while I'm plowing snow and it's starting to annoy me to put it nicely. Every once in a while I'm getting a shift encoder dtc and I can now drive down the road at 65mph with the TC in neutral, and this morning I drove about 45 miles in 4lo, and yesterday it never even lit up:D So I got to thinking what if it decides to shift into 4wd at 90?:( So I decided to check at the stealer to see what it would cost:eek::eek::eek: almost $600. I laughed at him. Then I was talking to one of the techs thats a friend of mine and he was telling me that some of these things had to be in a certain gear to change the motor or it wouldn't work right. Anyone know for sure if it has to be in any certain gear? Or know where I can get a shift motor a LOT cheaper by any chance?:D

If you're on in the A.M. tomorrow P.M. me and I'll email you the instructions if it will help. Maybe, just maybe we can get the parts a bit cheaper for you. :cool2:

You might need to open the case. When I was in mine for the pump rub, I did a lot of reading on the subject. There have been cases of the shift forks wearing and causing what you are describing.

If you have not done the pump rub kit, check the fluid level first, you may have to open it up and replace the back half. If that is the case, then it will be easy to do a full inspection of the internals.

Hmmm... Wonder why the difference? You might compare the position as new to that of the shifter in the 2 Hi position and the N positions before install? I don't know for sure as the only one I changed required neutral on the shaft? I assume you got the email?

Pulled the front drive shaft and ready to buy then install the new encoder motor. Does anyone have any info as to specific details on the install. Transfer case is currently in
2HI.
