A local farmer just bought a 01 with ~175k, the only major mod was a dsp5 switch with unknown but seemingly decent tunes. He was towing Monday and it suddenly clattered and shut off. He took it to my buddies shop were it was pulled and torn down, just as we suspected, sheared cam pin. Is this common or a freak deal???

I wouldnt call it "common" -- like the KDP on a Cummins, but its happened enough that keying the cam and crank is recommended.

Id have to agree with tom. I think there are pics in my motor build thread of both my crank and cam pin twisted/layed over getting ready to break. Motor had 165k on it, most of them with it tuned

Thats a scary thought. how bad was the engine? just the push rods or more damage?

Valves hit the pistons, they are slightly tweaked it seems. They just put a used long block in that my buddy had sitting there along with a built trans he had sitting around (yea, he has a few duramax parts around!!! lol!) because the owner needs it like yesterday. He actually just texted me and said it runs awesome so that's good
