I need advise badly. I have a 05 5500 4x4 gmc which had a bad engine and i picked up a 2011 3500 4x4 rollover with barely any miles. I want to put the newer motor in the 05 ,but cant seem to find anyone that can give me information on this subject. Can it even be done ? if so what would be involved. The topkick has a 5 speed allison the 11 has a 6 speed allison. I know there would be wiring and computor issues, but im sure someone has a solution to this and would greatly appreciate any and all advice.

Ah biggest issue is electronics won't interchange. ECM and injectors specifically, gonna have to think about that part. Second issue is oil pan and front cover don't easily inerchange. I just did that one for a marine build using LML block with 05 medium duty oil pan. Can be done, but is a pain...

Would be easier to step back a year to 2010 or older model if possible. But it can be done as your thinking, gonna need to take ecm and tcm from the 11 and likely most of wiring harness. I'll let some others chime in here..

I just put a 2011 lml duramax, Tranny, and t case out of a 2500hd silverado in a 2007.5 Silverado 2500hd. Bought 07 for real cheap, I got all computers and wiring harness with the lml drivetrain and instrument cluster. Had to do modifications to intercooler outlet pipe, move motor mounts, rerun fuel lines, ended up having to change abs pump and ebcm to 2011, wheel speed sensors were different and had to make shims to get them to work. Other then that most everything thing else bolted up and was close to the same since it was same body style.
Being a different body style I can see there being a few problems, but nothing a lil time and money and a lil patience couldn't fix! It took be about 6 months to get everything worked out and working. I was told I coulda just put drivetrain in and not switch out wiring and computers in cab, woulda had to program them all I guess, I just switched out since I had it all.
If ya got any questions I can try and help ya out. Best thing I did was get an account at eautorepair.net (Mitchell repair information) and bought a year subscription for the 07 and 2011 2500, i dont think I coulda don't it with out that! They have every connector and pin out all wiring harness and most the info ya need, diagnostic help, it was a lot easier then trying to google search everything! Plus ya can print the pages out! Well worth the money.
