What do you all do to determine if a tune is "safe" to run in a truck?

With EFI Live and HP Tuner out there with the ability to tune everything, what are the most important parameters to ensure the tune you created is safe? ie. Timing (x) degree, pulsewidth (x) etc.

I know the safest tune is stock  but I thought this would be some good info to know and add to this section.

PS - If that is asking for too much information from the professional tuners I apologize in advance.

I just looked at a LB7 stock trans tow tune...Timing was in the high teens and pulsewidth in the 1800s at WOT...Got a few of those running without any issues...

i second the neens high teen's low twenty's for timing and 1800-2000s at WOT is a pretty safe tune... PW and Timing are the two things you want to keep in check if you want to make a safe tune

I have had good luck using the A timing table in place of the C table (ala McRat 20/20 ;)). It is a GM table so I figure it is pretty safe. PW I add a little to as well but don't go crazy. Drive the truck and see how it feels. On my DSP2, I have a good everyday tune that has good power, is smooth, and gets good economy. I rarely switch to the big dog.

Thanks for the input guys.

EastSoot, I was talking about safe parameters for the engine.

Chris' suggestion of high teens (18-19) in the timing is about what I thought was safe, but I wasn't totally sure....pulsewidth I didn't know of a designated safe area, so thats good info to keep in mind......also I wanted to make sure there wasn't a table I was overlooking somewhere.

I agree with you on the timing, my everyday tune is 18 deg and 2200 pulse.

I must not be very safe on my DD tune, I run a max of 2400 pw with the timing set so its 60% before TDC gets up to 29 in the high end. No rattles or smoke and it stays nice and cool though.

thats about the limit for a stock 5speed alli as well. 1900 your pushing your luck harder..

alos runing 100mm3...

seen some stock tunes that max mm3 was 75mm3 @ wot... = about 800uS on a stock table

stock LB7 is 100mm3 @ ~1300uS fuel wise..

timing i keep max low 20s on a tow tune.. keeps it pretty clean as well.

Whitetail Addict has a LB7/5 speed...Are you referring to your LBZ tune?

Are you talking about keeping it safe for a stock trans or just a safe parimeters for engines ?

I misinterpreted your question...I thought you were referring to a stock trans tune, the info I gave was based on that...Sorry...

It's kinda hard to say what will live and what won't because every engine/truck is a little different...Just as a wild guess, I'd probably agree with Dr. Holliday...Mid 20s on the timing, 2500ish on the pulsewidth, high 20s on boost...I think everyone would agree that keeping the EGTs in check is a big factor...

No problem, thanks for clarifying Chris.

Its good to know I have a little more tuning left in the truck.....when I get a trans to hold it :D

I try to keep the EGTs in check.....my truck rarely sees 1000*

Yikes... I just tried a tune thats 425 rwhp (yeah Im dumb) and I LOVE it... I never knew that thing could move like that.
The trans wont like it for long though, darn it :)

I saw a max PW of 2444 Max Timing of 21.8.
It's a tune I looked over and downloaded from another site. 8100power made it I believe.
So far, it's FUN!!

It looks like it's out of line for a stock motor and stock trans though :(
