Safe tune , towing 10,000 lbs.

What's a safe tune for towing a 10,000 lb. trailer through the mountains?
I have a PPE tuner, & I have it on 120 hp now but was going to go with 90 or 50.
Have NO pyrometer BTW, if I did I'd leave it as is.

Install a pyro. With any tune you can get high egt's if it starts to lug down, even a 50hp tune.

Is this a once and a while tow or everyday? If its later get a Pyro other wise just lock out the OD. Your trans is more an issue then egts.

Run it all day long towing 90hp over but like Dozerboy said lock out 5th.

Ya I'd set it at 50 buddy. I tow on a 60 hp tow/eco tune and ive never had an issue.

But your 6sp trans is stronger then his 5sp so what you do doesn't apply to him.

I'm going to install a pyrometer & I had intended to lock out 5th when pulling the grades.

Well I put it on 90hp, usually drop it to 4th on a good grade. Haven't seen any temps higher than 11-1150 till I got up to around 6000ft & I saw a few times 1200.
Had to have some work done a G&J Diesel in Billings. The shop guy said he's seen some higher temps with stock tunes.

I'd keep it at 60ish or below and tow sensibly and you should be good. When I was on a stock trans that's what I did with 6th locked out and a turbo brake.

Till your on a hill and here comes a 20 year old Cummins , fenders flappin , bed sides ready to fall off , he is towing the same weight , can you keep from up shifting ? LOL!
