S480 turbine

What size turbine is everyone running in their s480s in thier compound turbo setup?

Reason i ask is i have a garrett gt4202r with an 82mm turbine and a 1.0 tial vband housing. Im worried the turbine is going to be too small and cause excessive backpressure. I was thinking of getting a gt45r turbine with its 87mm diameter. I know the s480 can come with a 96mm wheel and seems thats what the most common turbo used in a compound setup.

And you can rebuild them a lot cheaper when there is an issue. I had a gtx4202r need rebuilt after an oil pump went out. It was almost cheaper buying a new turbo. They won't rebuild the GTX ones they make you get a new center section. That's why I have what I have now.

Ive used garrett bb turbos before but upgraded them with ceramic bearings and had them vsr balanced WITH oil and they have performed phenomenally.

Garrett claims they arent rebuildable but thats so they can sell you another turbo. If you take out the shitty steel bearings and replace with ceramic youll bever look back. mike i seen your gtx55 spin video and ceramics make that look like journal bearings. Ill have to see if i can find a video i made a couple years ago of my experiments with bearings.

Must be a turbo design problem, one problem i could see would be differential thrust being put on the shaft. Ive run a 609 size caged ceramic bearing up to 200k rpms with no issue, for minutes at a time.

I even run an .011" oil restrictor on my one with 0 issues the last 50k miles.

I have the box 96mm 1.32 but have a 1.10 housing on order for my LS truck.

I wanted to do that for my friend's '72 C10 reg cab short box. The 2 turbo gurus I asked said it work as well as it does on diesel due to the gasser characteristics...but we built it for 100% Street driver, 12psi with methanol injection, runs like a raped ape! 4l80e/6.0 ls

I have the box 96mm 1.32 but have a 1.10 housing on order for my LS truck.
shoudve waited a little bit for the 1.15 housing(just looked & their available to order, ships in a month) a good bit cheaper than what places are getting for the modded 1.10s

I loved the 2 setups I built, mine had a 1.10 t4 on the big turbine back in the day. And I built Craig's black truck with the 1.32 but switched out a 1.10 t6 housing that was machined and welded to fit the 96/88 turbine.

I could send you my 1.10 t6, I'm not interested in selling, but you could run it til the 1.15 t6 is available. I believe I paid around $400 shipped for my 1.10 t6 machined...not sure what the new 1.15 is going to cost.

Hmmm. I might have to take you up on that.

I don't really have any complaints with the 1.32 housing. Just thought it might be fun to try a tighter housing to see how it reacts. In my opinion the stock charger is the choke point long before the 1.32 housing is, so maybe the 1.10 or 1.15 housing would be a better match for the stock charger.

Not sure what year truck you have this on, but I made over 900hp, track proven, with my stock turbo/483 setup. 1.32 housing of course

I'm talking about my 05. Just a stock injector, single cp3 truck. My daily driver.

I'm not looking for big power, I just like good driveability, and good towing manners with this one.


Edit: I also just run a box stock 475, not a 480 like the thread title. Like I said, I just like being able to pull my toy hauler with ease.

Well I would say you would for sure benefit from a smaller housing.
