It does this on the stock tune?

Yep. Also does it on all of my dps5 tunes and when it had a ppe in it. The truck still made 515hp like this so that's another thing that's got me wondering.

The colder it gets the worse it gets. It's gonna be about 0* tomorrow so it should be pretty fun

Do you have an intake heater still? Need to check your glowplugs out too. What do the balance rates and rail pressure look like when you first crank it up?

Balance rates about 3 weeks ago

Rail pressure was around 6k at idle when first started last time I checked. It still has an intake heater and I put new glow plugs in it 3 weeks ago. I guess I need to make sure they working.

I have 2 lb7s and I cold started them both the other day at the same time to compare. My puller has no fuel heater, no intake heater, no glow plugs, stock cp3/injectors/motor with an S475. The dd was smoking like crazy and running poorly and the puller ran like a champ with no smoke.

You need to make sure you dont have a dribbling injector nozzle. I would pull the glow plugs and disconnect the ficm and spin the motor over and look for any signs of fuel coming out the holes. Be a good time to do a compression test also.

with ficm unhooked you can spin it with the starter. best with a partner to turn key to crank it while you watch the glow plug holes for liuid/vapor flying out. If you don't have any help, maybe you can rig something up like a white cloth in front of the holes to spray on and observe for spray or video camera to record it while you crank?

Yes, that's johnboys truck. That's what an injector looks like when its hung wide open.
That guy sure helped me out when i put my other motor in a while back the motor sat for 9 years with injectors in it,i couldnt build presure because i had 2 injectors stuck open and of coarse they were the very back 2,1 on each side.

If it is a bent rod I'm up in the air on what rods to put in it. I have a set of crowers but do i want to run rods without wristpin oilers in a daly driver?

What's next a leakdown test? Or just assume the head gasket, valves and rings are ok and tear it down and visually inspect for bent rods or melted pistons?

Run the Crowers you already have , there a great Rod , the wrist pin oiling feature is nice and thats what I run on my truck but the feature isn't going to help DD use much , just under very high load .

As far as diagnosing further I would start with pulling the vanvle covers and check the injector cup on that cylinder , if its still sealed , the keep going and pull the head off that side and check for signs of head gasket issue and do a protrusion test on that cylinder .
