Talked to chris at ck today. Pretty reasonable doode for sure. 2 grand for a 4l80 rebuild kit, manual valve body, and trans brake. Gotta figure stuff out with the converter though. Then we have to figure out what we need to do to couple the 4l80 with the transfer case.

I've been pretty happy with the 4L80 in the van for the past couple of years. The only real mods to it are some billet internals and a Rossler trans brake with required pump and valve body modifications.

I like the idea of using a 4L80 since it already has TCC. I would just keep it out of 4th for the heavy trucks. The lighter trucks seem to be ok using 4th.

Alright I found an older 2WD 4L80E ($150) near me that came from a 1994 Van. I am looking in the long run to buy an old classic 56-59 Chevy truck and put that body on my RCLB truck frame. Being 2WD I was thinking I am lighter and could be even lighter yet.

Would this work?

I got a 4l80 4wd unit for a $100 last week that had no reverse. I'm getting alot of billet internals from chris at Ck performance. Mine won't be ready to run for a while but I'll be sure to let you know how everything goes. Give chris a call in the meantime he's a real nice doode and knowledgeable.

I would look for a late 99 or newer if it was me. By late 99 GM had made most all of the improvements internally to the 4L80E they did to them. It may help you out by having the better shafts, rear oiler case, and wider bands. It's all things that can be upgraded, but if you can get one with the improvements stock, why not. And I also don't see why more arent using the 4L80E over the 400. Even like Mike said, leave it out of 4th, but then you have a lockup converter.

Alright good to know I'll keep my eyes open for a later one. I assume the 99 and newer are a 3 piece case similar to the Allison and 4L60E.

Mike - At what ideal weight would I want to be down around to allow me to use 4th gear in drag racing situations?

As far as I know the 80's are all one piece cases. I'll be running 4th, truck will be 5-5500lbs. If it doesn't hold we'll figure out how to make it hold.

I use 4th, but I manually shift from 3rd to 4th because the overrun clutch helps hold and takes some stress off the questionable OD roller clutch when manually put in 3rd.

The 4L80 and the 4L60 are a one piece case with a separate extension housing.
I would be looking for the 4L85 behind a duramax van because it will have heat treated parts in the gear train.
As far as weight; nothing over 5500lb.
