Roll Cage

Local dragstrip requires cage on 11.49 or faster and since down to 11.61 on best run, gonna need roll cage soon. Are kits available and if so where. Crew cab truck. 2007 and up can go to 10.99 before cage, thought maybe just put 2007 since they don't check.

You read that wrong. A truck can't go to 10.99 before it needs a cage, that's reserved for factory cars that can run that time without any supporting mods. You still need at minimum a 5 point rollbar under 11.49 and at 10.00/135, then you need a cage, and NHRA license.

As far as kits, I haven't found one that fits worth a shit. Have it made for you is going to be your best bet.

Thanks for clearing that up Old Man Tan! Still hoping someone will chime in and know of someone that makes a kit! What are the required specs on the piping used?

Can the cage be kept in the cab or does it have to extend reward? Sorry for the dumb question but I know I'm not far off myself.

an extended or crew cab truck would be able to keep the cage in the cab as well. at the end of the day, work with your NHRA tech/inspector. he will be the one with the final say and have the highest discretion on how the cage can be built. the rules in the NHRA book are a guide line, safety is the main factor to the tech as well as proper build.

i have not seen any cage kits for these trucks but then again, i never looked for one. i built them instead

a roll bar can be kept in cab for as fast as 10.00. Mark at danville has one designed like that in his.

Mark's reg cab has a roll bar that passes tech without exiting the rear? If so, I need pics so I can do the same. :D

I dont even believe a "roll bar" needs to be certified if i recall when i was looking to do one in my truck.

Correct, however, I was under the impression that it still had to utilize the rearward bracing to the frame. If there is a loophole, I am all for it so I can keep a street appearance. Otherwise I will just do a full 10 point cage if I have to send bars out the rear regardless.

I bought the truck that the bar came out of that’s in marks truck it had side bars, main hoop behind the seat and then two bars 6” inside of the main hoop bars and they also went through the floor. 6 tie ins to the frame total. I’ll text mark tomorrow and tell him to visit this thread and comment pics.

These are what is on my phone. This has been on my truck for a couple of years now and like Logan said it actually came out of a rolling chassis I bought from John Powell on this site. I have been 10.24 with it and have been through tech without any issues with it but I cannot guarantee you will not have issues. I cut it out of the other truck and put it in my street truck because it was so nice and non-invasive for daily driving when you take the door bars out. I love it honestly and it works for me.

I just had two NHRA officials in my shop yesterday to cert two chassis's. One is a 7.5 cert cage for my El Camino that has no back bars but we built it for 25.4 cert and is very extensive and not a great set-up for a street truck (full funny car cage around driver).

I had them look at a 6 point bar we built for a 10 second camaro. The biggest issue they had was that the rear bars need to be no lower than 5" from the top of the main hoop. So those pics of Marks bar would never pass tech here. The rules don't say what min. angle of the rears bars need to be, but there are other specs that need to be followed. Roll bars down to 10.00 don't need to be certified, but still need to pass tech inspection. Tech seems to vary widely depending on the track and event. If you install a roll bar, you will need a 5 point harness and have to attach the seat to the cross bar. The cross bar needs to be within 4" of shoulder height with the seat attached.

My recommendation is to print off some of these pics and ask your local track tech their opinion. Our make a few drawings and let the tech take a look. Most techs are cool if asking before doing. This will save you a bunch of work in the long run.

Also please think about safety. After being in a wreck on the strip and having another very close call at 140+ mph, i'd rather error on the safe side. These are heavy trucks. We over built Max'd Outs cage using 2" and more bars/gussets then required and i still don't think that it is safe enough at the speeds it obtains. Although i'm getting old, lol.

Seriously, i've been racing all kinds of vehicles for a long time and have see some bad stuff happen. I've also seen people walk away from some ugly crashes when their safety equipment is done well. That is my .02 from an old safety conscience guy.

Couldn't agree more with you bud! What I have works for me since I'm not going any further with it, but may not work for others. It is definitely better than nothing.
