I've got a popping sound coming from the passenger side when I'm rolling forward but only when the wheels are turned. It only occurs when I'm going less than 10mph. Both upper control arms are new and one wheel hub is new. Lower ball joints feel good, has new outer tie rod ends. I know the pitman arm has wear but I don't think that would cause popping only with the wheels turned? This is a 2001 2500hd 4x4.

currently no where
if you have a popping noise coming from either side when you are turning your cv shafts are done! whats happening is that when the berrings in the u joints go bad they get slack in them and bounce back and forth when you are turning and applying any sort of power. the easiest way to tell is to get underneath your front end and grab a hold of the cv shaft and shake it back and forth (front to back / up to down) if there is any sort of play then they are bad.

Passenger side front body mount was missing the nut and the lower cup. I replaced it and moving it around the lot it hasn't popped yet so I've got my fingers crossed.

Might want to check the core support mount to see if that one is missing also. If one is gone, there may be more. Could also be a motor mount.

Check the driver side for the same thing. Always amazes me how noise travels under a vehicle.

Describe the pop: metal on metal, sounds like hitting something with a rubber hammer, slam of door?

Try turning off the A/C. Could be the recirculate door. Mine makes noise when it closes.

Jack up the front end and check both wheel hubs for play. Either can cause noise and it travels. When mine went out, I could not tell which side the noise was coming from, just that the noise was there.

Popping is metal on metal type sound, only rolling slow and only with wheels turned, you can actually rock the truck left and right with the steering wheel and make it does it over and over again.

Have you checked the wheel hubs for play. You said one was replaced, but at almost 200k I would suspect that the other is on borrowed time if it has not been replaced.

Also have you checked the torsion bar mounts and end links?

with that many miles you probably need all of the above.

Check wheel bearings
cv's
upper and lower ball joints
pitman and idler
tie rods

Have someone else look if it happens barely moving. Pretty much everything listed went on my parents LB7 around 200k miles. Pitman and idler arms go out frequently unless you go with an aftermarket setup, i.e. moog..
