Could you believe that nothing but a change in an exhaust system could increase the HP of a N/A gas engine 50-100%? Been there done that back in the 1970's. Look up expansion chamber design, or find the Gordon Jennings book on it.
A properly designed exhaust system can actually create a partial vacuum in the cylinder before the intake valve opens. If you have a partial vacuum, it works like boost, it draws in more oxygen that the cylinder volume alone can. Ditto for intake manifolds that are designed to do improve volumetric efficiency.
