I don't really have any answers for you James. My lly was making a clunking sound and "jolt" when shifting from drive to reverse last winter. I really noticed it plowing snow. It seemed to not be as bad if I hit neutral for a second before shifting into reverse. I always shift with my foot on the brakes too btw.

bump an old thread,

I have this same issue, but mine will clunk from D to R, R to D, Stop go etc.

Brand new U joints and carrier bearing, rebuilt transfer case. Have not checked the Rear end yet, but just seems like there is too much play.

Like the clunk comes from how much the driveline rotates and makes noise when it stops. Cant be right!

may need a new slip yoke. I had tried a new nickle plated one off Amazon and it worked for a while, then started clunking again.

I swapped to a new LML driveshaft (gets rid of the 2 piece driveshaft for a single) and clunking all went away. longest its been clunk free.
