bad news... think my turbo is done. i have done all the leak/pressure testing i can. had the dealer look at it with their tester and the vanes will only open to 85% when commanded to go to full. i was told it could be the Vane Position Sensor ($400) or the control soelonoid($300) or the exhaust housing could be gummed up with carbon ($ ???) not sure if i sould eat it and buy a replacement LLY turbo, rebuilt, or shotgun parts at this to see if it fixes it?? any one have similer experience or know a good replacement turbo?

You could try taking it apart and cleaning it, or it could be a good excuse to get a 4094 or a cheetah. :) Wish I could be more help. Free bump for you though.

what is the difference between the GT3794VA and the GT4094VA. all i see is that is it can support 75 more HP... not worth the extra $$ for a daily driver/ tow truck

Man I just sold an LLY turbo unfortunately. I definitely wouldn't throw parts at it. Other than that its your choice really. Personally I would just try and find a good stocker, but that is just my opinion.

The gt4094va has a larger compressor wheel , turbine wheel and different vains than the 3794, if it is just a DD / tow rig then no the 4094 or "Stage 2" would not be worth it , if your going to push the truck hard then yes the 4094 would be worth the extra money .

just a thought, unless your set on wanting a new turbo, maybe take it to another dealer that will be able to diag the problem the right way. It seems that they are just shot gunning parts because they dont know much about how the system works.

I would go another stocker if you don't have efi. or pull yours and look it over. pain in the ass to pull but not technical.

im bad with stuff breaking... i always see it as upgrade time = ) but i dont want to drop lots of $$ if i dont have to. i guess right now garrett doesnt have any in stock. aligatior will hook me up with the Cheeta for just a little more than the stock one is gonna cost.. i think i may go that route. my opinon of a used one is that i could be in the same boat in 4 months. and after the dealer looked it over, i think it is a combination of problems... bad control selonoid and gunked up turbine wheel. if i get some time ill try to pull it apart and clean it out, but then i think i need to do the turbo relean.. can i do that without a tech 2??

Most of the issues I see with stock turbos are the control valve, rarely the sensors, and in maybe 4-5 of them the unison ring was rusted so it did not move. Thats was only on older low mileage trucks and it was rusted in place not movement at all. I have never seen a gunked up turbine wheel, it usually gets hot enough to just leave some soot and its usually all dried up and dusty. You can check the position sensor pretty easily if you want to, to eliminate it. Its a simple voltage check with the sensor removed from the turbo and depressing the plunger while monitoring voltage on a dmm. The dealer should have done this. You also could find the parts cheaper than that.

But like I said, if you need me to say yes the turbo is shot and just shut my mouth I understand also:D

Any more info on how exactly to do this test would be nice... like voltages
