Hi I'm new to this site mostly because I've never had any trouble with my 2002 Chevy Duramax.
I just replaced the fuel filter for the second time since buying new. The first time everything went smoothly. This time I purged the air and it started fine for just a few seconds then quit. So I verified a second time that all the air was out and cleaned up diesel a second time. It still won't start after about 20 seconds total crank time. Also, I hear a motor running like maybe the fuel pump but that's in the tank, right. The motor I hear is in the front center of the engine.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jerry

I went and gave it one more try. This time I also gave it full throttle. I must have just been too impatient. She's a purring like all good Duramax should. Thanks! Signing off soon. Got to get up in 7 hours. JerryL

:welcome6: FYI our trucks do not have an in tank pump, nor a helper lift pump from the factory..

Fill our your signature in the user cp.

They just need to crank alittle to push the air out, but I'd rather have that then a low pressure injection pump were as you'd need to crack the injector lines to push the air out. Next time don't be afraid to crank it a couple times.... Change your fuel filter every other oil change :thumb:

Thanks for all the replys.

Larry, my weekend begins on Thursday also. However my 10-hour days suck.

BombDoc, yeah it's stock though I fantisize about better mileage and/or more towing power with a chip. I'd probably be happy with the power of the newer models. I pull a 26' 5th wheel with an 18' ski & fish behind that. Can't wait for spring.

x MadMax, thanks for the education. Unfortunately I don't know many specifics about diesels because fortuantely I've had zero trouble with my truck. I've rebuilt a few gas engines and done almost all of my other work but not trannys. What and where is the fuel pump? I heard something running. Used my screwdriver and it sounded like inside the front of the engine.
You mentioned changing the fuel filter every other oil change. For me that's every 10K. Why so often? That thing is such a pain in the butt to change that I don't even do it on the scheduled 30K. Is there a better tool than my band type oil filter wrench? I'm thinking about getting another band type and cutting the handle shorter.

Thanks to all for all your interest and replies!

Buy a strap wrench and use that. Every other oil change is when i change my fuel filter. Last change had around 10K on it and truck was running like chit. They like clean fuel and without have a pusher pump it keeps the injection pump from working so hard.

Fuel Filter

Where do you get your fuel filters? My first one was from the dealership. WOW$$$. My second was a Hastings from the farm and ranch supply. Never again. It's just a little longer and therefore harder to put on. I fussed a bit in the process. {:) I'll get a strap wrench. Thanks for the advice. Gotta go. Dinner and a relaxing evening with my sweet lil lady.

The easiest way to change the filter is to pull the passenger's side inner fender. Takes about 2 minutes at the most to pull it out then the filter is right there in the wide open. I wouldn't go more than 15k miles on the fuel filter.

You should also change the spin on filter on the transmission (assuming you have an Allison) the same time you change the fuel filter.

The only fuel pump on the truck is the CP3 high pressure fuel pump. It is located in the valley at the front of the engine buried under everything on the top of the engine. It has two parts to it. There is a low pressure gear pump that pulls fuel from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the pump. It then pushes it into the high pressure pump where it is pressurized to 23,500 psi in your LB7. From there it is fed to the fuel rails that feed the fuel injectors. There is a fuel pressure regulator, or fuel control actuator depending on who you're talking to, on the CP3 that sometimes makes buzzing noises after the key is turned off.
