Removing pitman arm from centerlink

The only way I know of to remove the pitman arm from the centerline is using a ball joint separator (pickle fork). What's the trick to doing it without damaging or destroying the boot? Every time I've used a ball joint separator on something with a boot, the boot has been destroyed.

I've always lifted the boot out of the way with one hand while lining up the tool with the other. Then give it a whack.

Sent from my SCH-I535

And not using the pickle fork as a lever, or for leverage, just drive it in flat and don't try and "pry" with it, sometimes if the boot is old, or depending on accessibility, boot damage is inevitable. A little heat goes a long way, as well as some good penetrating oil.

Good luck:)

Any way of telling if they are 4 or 3 spline w/o removing them?

IDK fer sure, there's a few threads about it between here and a couple other forums....

I thought I read that all the 05 and up HD's had the Three spline model, and I'm pretty sure there's a number stamped in there somewhere...

I guess I could have done a search before hand, found an "answer" to my question. Thanks :thumb:

Get a decent size hammer and hit the center link on the side of it in front of the pitman arm socket. It'll usually rattle it loose without damaging anything. Unless you miss :roflmao:

x2 i do this for all ball joints and pitman arm type joints. Get a 3 lbs mini sledge and some big gurl panties and wack the hell out of the linkage all around the joint, the stick the fork in if it didn't already pop. usually you barely tap the fork in and it'll pop easy.

when i changed mine i beat a pickle fork in sprayed it with wd 40 for a couple days prior and ended up having to take a die grinder to it to get it off. i tried to be careful and got lucky and didnt wreck the boot. it was a pain in the nuts.

edit. it came off the centerlink fine, it was the steering box it wouldnt come off.

I always removed the steering box and put a puller on it; then torque it down and hit the pitman arm with a hammer. - Was always the easiest way for me.

In my case, its only been together for about two months. There is something wrong with my kryptonite idler arm, so I had to pull that out - that came out fairly easily. But my steering box is leaking like a sieve and sloppy as... well... you know...

Since I just put a new pitman arm on, I don't want to destroy it in the processes of swapping the steering box. I'll try hitting the centerlink and go from there.
