when the motor puked oil it ruined the firewall pad. I removed it and ordered a new one which I have here. But after cleaning the firewall I much prefer the clean look of no pad. Plus you gain a bit more room back there for bolts, etc.

My question is, has anyone removed it and noticed additional noise or heat in the cab? I wouldn't think so as well as these trucks are insulated inside. The engine is about ready to go back in, so if it's going back on it has to be now.

off topic but what happened to your motor?

lost a piston, best guess. Haven't pulled it apart, but one dead cylinder and a lot of crankcase pressure. Still ran, drove it home, but gray smoke out the pipe.

Just finished swapping the LMM stuff over to an LBZ motor I bought.

i would think you would be just fine without it . worst case you can always reinstall it later . its not like our engines are that loud , and you will still have the interior sound dampning .

Remove it!!! The header wrap on my twins was rubbing on the pad, and it rubbed right through the wrap right in the middle (2pcs. now). Now I get to order some more material and re wrap the hot side pipe. Im going to remove mine as well.

Can one remove the pad when the motor is in the truck?

I think you can remove it in the truck since you can tear it up, not caring if it can be re-installed. There are several plastic clips that hold it, but they un-thread by hand.

Thanks guys, I'm leaving it out. I am ready to re-install the engine, probably tomorrow. I'll start a new thread with pics of the MPI twin install.

We took mine out, It was messed up in a few spots so it looks alot better out, I have never replaced the heat shields on the up pipes, I just wraped my down pipe with 1" wide header wrap.
