This year I noticed at several events guys removing their air filters before competition, Is this a common practice across the board? Is there
that much of a performance gain? Couldnt bring myself to remove my filter.

It's very common but I'm trying my best to run an air filter. I actually made an adapter up so I can run 3 air filters at the same time.

After about 600 rwhp, an air filter starts to reduce power a little. Not sure it's worth the risk though. At 500rwhp, the stock filter, a K&N, and nothing, all dyno about exactly the same.

Oddly, we pulled the K&N at 800rwhp and redyno'd and it was only about 5 rwhp lower, but it was starting to crush the intake tubing from the vacuum.

A kid I pull with does it with his LBZ and I say he is crazy! After about 8 pulls or so I noticed my truck was down on power a little bit. Changed fuel filters etc still not the same as the beginning of the year. Me being the dope I am totally forgot to check my air cleaner. Holy shit thing was clogged! I am surprised at how it ran with no air lol :spit: A good long cleaning and truck was back to normal.

Air filter was brand new, put it in for the 3 hook of the year. You will not see me with out an air filter on my truck at the pull.

Thanx for the info, I am no where near enough power to risk it yet, and I really was thinking the risk on the dirt pulling track would not be worth the gain, and it appears your pictures confirm it

Most I see that run open filters are ahead of the tires along ways. Stickin out of front grille. Not inside hood by wheel well the throw up at turbo. But they also pay close attention to the dirt and dust clouds and shut down ahead of time. Can't stop it all but most. But I would not chance it. Way to much dirt flyin around.

well yeah thats a given but seems like that turbo is a giant vacume cleaner and all the dirt is getting blow all over by the tires....seems like no matter what a bunch of it would get inhaled

I'm meaning middle of truck, middle of grille. Like empires pullin truck. but stills gotta ingest some I would think. A lot of people do it. Would never do it from anywhere under hood tho.

Look at the tractors, they all run no filters. I have done both I don't think it will gain much atall. But everything adds up, soooo
What ever you do, do not ever try this without a fenderliner installed

If you filter setup and plumbing are large enough there wont be any real gains , I have seen a few trucks with too small of filter or intake pick up 40 HP by pulling the filter , on the drag strip I have ran no filter for 2 years now , I have had to replace one wheel this year , it never failed but it did get a few small dings , IMOP not worth the risk sled pulling .

I seen the guys from J&R auto run a metal filter with a dirt skirt on it pick up 10hp on a dyno with no other changes

However I agree with Trent if your filter is clean and sized correctly you shouldn't need to do this Jmho
