Refinishing factory wheels

Has anyone ever painted and clear coated factory rims. Unfortunately, my factory rims are starting to look pretty ragged. I have installed studded winters on them and am planning on new wheels for my summer tires. I am interested in painting gloss black with a clear coat. Is this a good idea?

I just polished mine as best i could and then used vinegar to get the oils off and i plasti dipped mine. Worked great

plasti dip is the way to go. Clean the wheels w/ some good degreaser and go to town.
