Reducing my trans temps

For the most part my trans does ok, but now that summers here and the temps are getting hotter, my trans is running hotter ( nothing over 200 but a click or so under that).. just wondering what can be done to keep the temps down some what. I was thinking trans cooler up grade and does the C3 oiler actually reduce heat as well? Trans a is a Stage IV Sun coast that's got 30 - 40 k on it since it was built. Any ideas or comments welcome. I'd just like my truck to run it's best and run cooler. Thanks

You can run a bigger cooler and see a modest drop in temperature but regardless you will see temps in that range do to engine heat soak and ambient temperatures.

It's still good insurance as with adding a deep pan which increases fluid capacity. Heat is the nature of the best with a built transmission and additional line pressure. The only other thing you can do is drive with the TC locked to reduce slippage. Your temps are norm for what everyone else sees

so the oil cooler will help a lill and would be a good idea? I already have the deep pan... I know the coolers not going to cool more then 15-20 degrees maybe a touch more but that's to me seem like added insurgence on a hotter day or hot lapping at the local track. I just didn't know where to get one and if it'd be worth it...Does Mike L have a website with pics of his products? Thanks

I changed my non tow haul trans tc lockup settings to lock up by 22mph. And modified but also left the shift points lower for better fuel economy vs. t/h mode. This took several tries and tweaks to get everything correct. But I did notice lower trans temps ..especially in stop and go and low speed where the tc wasn't normally locking- not to mention at low speeds you aren't getting much air through the cooler as well.

Getting a larger cooler is on my list as well... but this is something that made a noticeable difference (if you have EFI / HP tuners)

A larger cooler is definitely worth it . A drop of 10 degrees is worth it. The thing is unless you run a sump guage you never really see the drop in return fluid. The factory guage is heat soaked being close to the valve body.

If you run a sump guage as I do you'll see about a 20 degree drop in return fluid that the sump filter is sucking up. I have Mike's cooler don't regret the purchase as like I said the sump has cooler fluid to draw. The factory guage once everything is at operating temp is missleading

my 6.0psd cooler dropped my trans temps 40-50 degrees. trans has never been over 160 since. after hard dyno pulls and sled pulling its only seen 160 not a touch more.

Hey Mike,

Im wandering if your cooler would be overkill for a built 65E ?

Want to lower temps, but im sure there is Such a thing as optimal temps, that i know little about LOL

200* isnt hot at all...... Mine has run 200* (during the summer) since I built it 140,000 miles ago.

I run a mike L cooler and love it. It dropped my temps about 20*.

Give us a price on the cooler as it can be bought from the dealer as it is the only place you can get it. Not the price your buddy gave you for a stolen one. I buy these day in and day out for 425.00 my cost. They work great on the Fords running low line pressure. Hoses will have to be made to hold 200 psi for the Alli. Dangerous. Will it drop in or will the trans lines have to be cut down from 5/8 to 1/2?
I know you post this shit to try and irritate me but you are the same guy that couldn't tell a bad converter from not having 4th gear and you blamed me for a misdiagnosis. You were a whiny little bitch then and still are.
Want me to post your emails to me? I like the one best when you gave me your whinny apology and I told to to f---off.
Tell us what BIG DIPPER told you when he called you. Your trans is working now because I told Dustin how to build it. Ask him. You are a whinny moron.
Think I won't say this to your face? catch a plane and I will pick you up at the airport.

Holey shit! :happy2:

Now I don't know this guy (whinney) from Jack John or Bill and was going to question that kind of drop in transmission temp unless he's spraying it with NOS or packing it with ice but that response will work too. :D

Waiting to hear his response :D

That Just happened!!

Thought about running a small electric fan up front mounted to the trans cooler.. (since the cooler is hidden behind the bumper) might help at lower speed but I have a feeling the amount of help would be pretty minimal.

Have also thought about acquiring another stock cooler and making up some hydraulic hoses (I have the equipment to crimp ends on) and running two....

So far changing lockup speeds has helped out a little.. so thats a start.

Hey, someone said the stock cooler connections are -10 AN fittings on the 6 speed? is that correct?

Like Ben said, 200* isn't that bad. Up to 220* I think you are still safe. Personally, I don't have an issue with temps - even towing 10 000lbs in the summer I only get to 200* and empty maybe 150*. But if I needed a cooler, I'd buy Mike L's Seatrab to replace the stocker. It's a proven winner.

C3 oiler won't do much for cooling, but it's good for keeping the C3 clutches lubricated. I'd invest in one if I were you as well.

I thought the cooler had the push in lock style fitting same as the trans end does??? I haven't seen a Dmax in a month and don't remember offhand.
Trans tuning will definetly help temps as well. I made adjustments for my larger tires that seem to help. It seems the sooner and longer I keep the converter locked, the cooler it runs - which makes sense to me.

So anyways back to the subject, how much would a trans cooler fan drop your temps? I know a bigger cooler works great for when you are moving at freeway speed.

For town driving and stationary operating, probably a fair bit I would imagine. It may block a little air moving through the IC and Rad on the highway though if you don't relocate it as I doubt it would move as much cfm as air passing through at highway speeds would. Worth a try though maybe.......

Right now I have Mike's trans cooler and it runs way cool at freeway speed. It does get a little warm at stop and go traffic, what cfm would the fan have to flow to make a difference, you'd think for low speeds anything bit of air would be good. But then if you place a fan over the bigger cooler would it effect it when you are at the freeway speeds?
