I made close to 4 digit power and get 20mpg running 75mph. Suck on that.
Exactly.
Show me a gasser that can do that and tow 20 000lbs.

I'm willing to bet you have already spent more on your truck than your retirement account and maybe your house that is if he don't rent

Well then, hook me up brutha!Uhhh, gonna have to disagree, IF we are talking strict race/fast DD truck status now. You can have a built 6.0, with a S480 on it, some 80# sticks, E85 tuned and a built 80e for much much less than a built dmax/alli.
And when/if you blow the 6.0, you can grab a junkyard 5.3/4.8 and slap it in for dirt cheap.
In that aspect the cost is leaning towards gasser being cheaper, I mean hell, I made ~700hp with my gas guzzler for well less than 8k...

CoCo, don't try to justify owning a Dmax. 95% of the members here don't need one including myself. I wanted one and I bought it. I didn't need to get married either but I like playing with my girl.
Well then, hook me up brutha!
Cuz im building an LS for 650-700whp right now and i cant come close to that cost!!!
Built 4L60/70E by Rpm, level 7 $3850
S480 and full kit w/intercooler $4800 (im actually going to use a Procharger F1-R kit for a cost of $6800, but ill use the S480 cuz thats what you outlined)
Injectors $600
E85 tuning $500
Built LQ4 customer supplied block $3800
Ported heads w/upgraded valves $1000
$13,150
There's obviously going to be other things that need to be accounted for too, like a trans cooler($350), in tank fuel pumps($500), intake manifold($1000) exhaust...etc etc
Maybe you can pull it off, and thats awesome and this is not an attempt to challenge you, but i cant do it for that cost and I just cant see a 700whp gasser for $8k
But hell, some guys can build a 1000hp duramax for under 8k too
In contrast...
Duramax power (ricer math FTW!)
Built trans $4300 intaslled
Efi live DSP5 tuning $700
Turbo upgrade $2300 (drop in VGT)
Injectors $3000 (used)
Lift pump $650
Head studs $600
$11,550
Stock CP3, stock block
610-630whp
Push the limits with a dual fueler or stroker CP3 for an additional $2200 and 700 is an easily attainable goal for a whoping
$13,750
So an "almost" apples to apples outcome between the two is very comparable in the estimated cost to achieve said outcome
Granted the gasser has a built engine, and a Dmax build "CAN" start in the mid teens, but the duramax will still have the ability to drive and idle like a stock truck
But we all know this
I had an LB7 which was fantastic for mpg. Went to the Florida panhandle doing 70-90 mph and still got 19.5 mpg which was hand calculated. I have an LLY and at 70 mph i can get 17.5 average. Even towing in the LLY wasn't that bad. Towed a 24ft travel trailer around 5000lbs at around 65 - 75 and still got 11.9 mpg. But I do live in Florida so its not like we have a bunch of hills. I should have never sold my LB7.
His gasser wouldn't keep up towing this same 21,000lb trailer that I did at 70 avg 9.5mpg loaded 17.5 coming back
instead of going with that 60e, id swap an 80e and do a shift kit and converter for probably 1000k total with price of trans. But I don't know your application, so not sure if an 80 will fit
Check it for boost leaks and while it is under pressure listed around the EGR cooler and make sure it very slowly drops pressure. We find a lot of trucks, mainly LBZ/LMM but some LLYs with EGR valves that are leaking and it kills the mileage. Tune a truck and have the guy call 2 weeks later with rave reviews on the 22+ mpg; 8 months later he calls saying the tuning "went bad" and he is only getting 17-18 now; come in to look it over, find and fix the EGR issue (weld the ports in the intake tract shut) and 2 weeks later he calls back with the rave reviews again.
But his nephew's "partner's" sister's dad just called with a 2020 Duramax and he didn't get that good of mileage with his stock suffocated and untuned truck towing a 14,657lb quadruple hull catamaran pontoon sailboat. So that makes you a liar and him right.
Even as the owner of a diesel performance shop and multiple 700+rwhp Duramax trucks I will say that $ for $ for a play toy street/strip truck we would all have a lot more money in the bank if we started with a RCSB 4x4 1500, threw a turbo on it, built the trans, and did the other upgrades as you broke things. At 700rwhp it will outrun most 1000rwhp Duramax's and when you blow it up you pick up a $300 motor at the junk yard and swap it in before the next track night, or build one that will actually hold up for a good bit cheaper than a budget Duramax build. At those power levels it won't be reliable, able to tow much (above and beyond the 1500's lack of towing capacity), very practical to daily drive on it's high stall converter and big cam, and to be light enough to run good times it won't have back doors or seats.
On the other side for a daily driven, family hauling, work, tow, play, street, strip, and sled pulling truck there is nothing that will compare to a Duramax. You can have anything from a stock trans safe tune truck that is more fun than 80% of daily driven street vehicles, to a fully built 1000++ rwhp and thanks to everything being computer controlled and the hard work of the folks at EFI Live you can change the way it runs with the flip of a switch and use it for pretty much anything you could need a vehicle for, and get good mileage doing it. Because of that a Duramax is the most practical vehicle for a horsepower junkie who only has the funds, space, and/or wife's permission to own one vehicle.
Don't worry though guys, if you go on let's say silveradoss.com and try to explain to them that a diesel would get better mileage, tow more, last longer, and be faster they would argue until they were blue in the face and try to run you off too. I joined to find some of the SS parts for my ECSB and went in their "quickest list" thread and asked if a 2500HD Duramax that was an SS Clone counted and could be added to the list (the 2nd best ET by .04 and 6mph over the best trap), most didn't take too kindly to it.
80 will fit, many have done it and there are bolt on kits to do so for my application...there's added cost there to me attaining the trans and mounting kit and some added HP loss associated with the 80
But it is a much more stout unit
Their are a couple trusted shops w/in the TBSS community that have done tons of R&D to make the 70 survive the weight of the TBSS at the power level I'm seeking to attain so im givin that a shot...my bigger concern is going to be with the AWD hard parts
