I have a 2013 cyclone 5th wheel and loaded with water, food for 3 days and 2 wheelers, and a dirt bike, might be 2000lbs I'm at the 18k rating. So what happens when I loaded it a little more, and hit 20k? My axles and tires are all within spec, the back is still within its limits.
Also what are you'll using for a hitch, my B&W is only rated at 18k also. A few years ago I didn't care, it will handle it, but not worth the fines, and getting the chance of getting sued.
Thanks.

Dont think so, my tongue is 2000#, which is the weight on the axle. Pin box is everything, my trailer is 12000, so I guess im only supposed to have 4000# more in the trailer or behind it? Im sure u could pull more but u no the deal its on u if it goes wrong

Pretty sure pin weight is 15 to 20 % of your trailers weight..Also depends how you load ot aswell .
I ended up getting rid of my 2500 and got the 3500 dually.
Dealer said I was fine but they just wanted the sale .
I would just get to a certified scale and find out the right way.

I have scaled it, I was at 18k for trailer weight, and no my trailer axles.
I'm at 6200 drive and 14800ish trailer, grossed at 26,000 truck weight is 8k without trailer. I'm going to be adding a bigger fresh water tank and another 4 wheeler which would be putting me at around 28,000 gross or 20k trailer. The problem is the GVWR is 18k, I'm wanting to know if the dot looks at the GRWR or just goes off axle weights. I've heard both ways and hoping someone on this form would know.

I know when I manged a flooring distribution in IL.
We got a ticket for too much weight on axles .And had to get it off right there or be towed .
We were 1000 lbs over.Troopers had there own scale to drive on to see.

seeing how it may be me, my wife, and three kids behind you one of these days on the highway, how about you get a 20k hitch to pull a 20k trailer.

Fyi, I pulled my pin box rating off of the pin box, its 16, 000. My 5er is 12, 000#, my tongue weight is 2000#, that was in the owners manuel. Pinbox rating is not the same as tongue weight.

I hope your not trying to be a smart ass. Also, I said, if you would read everything, that at 18, not 20. Wanting to know what hitch you'll are running and also wanting to know if the I can go over the 18k on the trailer as long as axles are within spec.
FYI the hitch can take it. But being that I'm asking what others use shows that I'm looking into a new one before I load anymore. So what are your thoughts in a good hitch????? Also, I won't do anything that I don't feel safe doing, I'll walk away from $1,000,000 if I know it's dangers.
You should have seen the hitches that my dad used in the 80's, 4 bolts to the bed and pulled 5ths all over, some were over 20k.

So what is pin box rating?

Mine is 16000#, the trailet is 12, 000, so I can add 4000# more weight to the trailer, water, supplies, or a jetski if I wanted. Thats for my trailer , dont know what yours is.

A little trick I use if going a far ways from my house is fill up with water when I am by my destination. No reason to haul that extra weight for nothing.

Pin box is the trailer hitch right? Not asking the rating if it, but what it is. Lol.
I have to fill with water for camping in the mountains.

Like gramma always said it's better to be a smart ass than a dumb ass. :D From what I made of your post, you stated you're already at 18k and want to add some other stuff that will make it 20k. Here's some info that may help.
- Tongue weight is the weight a tow behind trailer puts on the bumper hitch of your truck...irrelevant to fivers.
- Payload is the weight you can put in the bed of your truck...the weight a fiver puts on your rear axle/truck
- trailer axles have to match the weight of the trailer/toys they will support...granted some of the weight is offloaded by the fiver hitch in the bed but axles still have to withstand the entire trailer weight. so if 16k loaded, need at minimum 2 8k rated axles (axles can be swapped out for higher rating ones if desired)
- pin box is rated for total weight of fiver/toys...so if fully loaded is 18k, need a pin box rated for at least 18k
- fiver hitch has to be rated for the max weight of fiver/toys and of course the mounting system has to be rated for max weight as well
- load distribution (front axle, rear axle, trailer axle(s)) ratings are to ensure folks distribute the load properly (you can't put all the weight in the rear of your trailer or you'll be popping a wheely, and vice versa)

I have a fiver that is 13.5k dry...it can be loaded with water/toys/fuel/etc to 18.5k. My pin box is rated for 19k, my fiver hitch is rated for 24k, my payload capacity is in excess of 5k. The fiver puts about 4k payload on the truck. I really want the B&W turnover gooseneck hitch with the 18k slider, but that 500lb delta has me worried enough not to do it. I know it would hold just fine but again, when it comes to hauling 18.5k behind me and the family with other families on the road, i always error on the side of caution. I needed an autoslide because I have a short bed on the only one at the time was the superglide 24k model. I love it! Pricey, but well worth it. I had the 20K husky manual slider and not only was it a pain to manually maneuver at times, it actually came unhitched after a 400 drive when I was pulling into the parking lot! It was freakin crazy and luckily just dropped on my bed. Of course when I contacted Husky they claimed impossible...but seeing as how I've been hauling for over 20 years with no trailers falling off and how the trailer made it 400 miles to the destination and the fact I was visiting a bunch of my highway patrol buddies who all inspected the vehicle/hitch/etc and all concluded it unlatched itself somehow, I'm pretty sure it was a hitch failure. Needless to say that hitch was never used again.
