Racing seats, harness, and airbag?

The NHRA rules say any vehicle required to have a roll bar or roll cage is required to have a 3-inch quick release driver restraint system, with a 2" crotch strap. So I'm going to do a racing seat and 5 point I guess.

It seems at that point, the factory airbag might not be a great thing to have blowing up in my face in the event something bad did happen.

Anybody disable theirs (pull the fuse?). Or is this a dumb question?

And FWIW this isn't in my daily driver...so I'm not worried about street legal or anything like that.

Thanks

From what I understand the airbag will not deploy if the factory seat belt is not engaged.

Also when we first put the roll bar in Casper we made it so we could still install the factory seat if we wanted.

We got the ones for Casper from Summit. You will want to buy covers if you plan to drive at all on the street.

That's good to know Kat. If that is true, I guess it's a non-issue.

And Trent, the rules look like their pretty open to what you can use for a seat...

"The drivers seat of any car in competition must be constructed, braced, mounted, and upholstered to provide full back and shoulder support. The drivers seat must be supported on the bottom and back by the frame or crossmember........."

"All seats must be upholstered, or as noted under Class or SFI requirements.."

etc etc. etc.

It looks like aluminum racing seats have slots for all 5 straps. Ones like Corbeau have four slots, but nothing for the crotch strap. But the NHRA rules say on an OEM or OEM-type seat the crotch strap can cross in front of the seat and doesn't have to go through. Not sure if a Corbeau type seat is "OEM-type," but I would assume so.

I pulled both factory air bags and associated wires

I installed a aftermarket wheel and you will need to do something to cover the hole in the dash for the pass side

If I had to do it again.......I would do the same thing:D

What Kat said is correct AFAIK, I did mine for more of a weight reduction

you would be surprised at how much those suckers weigh

hmmmm... i wonder if disconnecting the seatbelt chiming wire would in turn cause the airbag to not deploy?

Good question. I've been wanting to get rid of the door/seatbelt chime for a while now. Anyone done this already?

I unplugged the wire under the seat & put a switch in the wire door sensor. I disconnected the door sensor 1st but got sick of not having the entry light so I wired the switch in. I shut the switch off so I can use the radio with the doors open on the beach.

Have a Jegs Poly type seat in my wagon and even with a cover, it sucks bad comfort wise. And our Novas had aluminum Kirkey's and evened with a nice velour cover, its rough on the kidneys too. Id look into a Sparco, Korbeau, etc. if you'll be spending any amount of time in them.

ok nvmind...when you said "disconnect the chime" I interperated that as you are disconnecting the actual "chime" (which is the door speaker), not the "seat belt buckle chime trigger". :)
