Just took delivery of our new 2012 2500HD Duramax/Allison w/towing package this week. It's our first diesel truck and I have a few questions.

1) This pickup came with two 125 Amp alternators. Why ? Redundancy or specific need ? It's a $270 option.

2) I noticed there is no redline or yellow in the tachometer. I asked my salesman about this with my concern about over-revving the motor. He said the computer won't let the motor be over revved. Is this true ?

3) A service rep at the dealer suggested no heavy towing for 500 miles, otherwise break it in like I'm going to drive it. Opinions ?

4) Years ago we used to change oil and filter at 500 miles on a new motor. Is it OK to wait for the factory recommended interval ?

We haven't pulled anything yet, but on the way home there is a long steep hill. My 97 Chevy w/5.7 gas motor would downshift at least once maybe twice. The Duramax rpm stayed steady and so did the speed without downshifting. Awesome.

Thanks and I look forward to your help.

Some people put additional electrical equipment on the trucks, which needs the extra power. It is not necessary stock, but it won't hurt anything either, and now if you throw on a winch or big stereo you're set!

Yes, the computer won't let you hurt the motor. It will do about 3250 RPM when driving, and as high as 4800 RPM when engine braking. Nothing to worry about, they are built for it!
3) A service rep at the dealer suggested no heavy towing for 500 miles, otherwise break it in like I'm going to drive it. Opinions ?
There are a lot of opinions on this, and in the end, everyone's truck seems to run fine. I would drive it normally, including towing, right from the start. But that is just my opinion.
4) Years ago we used to change oil and filter at 500 miles on a new motor. Is it OK to wait for the factory recommended interval ?
It should be fine to wait for the factory interval, but it certainly won't hurt to change it at 500 miles the first time. I probably would, personally.

Yep, the Duramax is quite the truck! Enjoy your new toy/tool!

:hello: and :welcome5:

What they said :thumb: With the exception that we usually wait the 500 miles to beat on them :D
