why is 4th called hero gear

I would say because if you could pull through 4 you would be a hero to the dmax crowd. you would be making boku power

Exactly. It takes huge power to pull 4th and for the most part it doesn't happen.

Basically when you go to 4th you are trying to be a hero, but end up a zero.

What really happens is you boost and come out of the hole hard and have RPM's to your favor. You have enough time to think stupid thoughts so you poke the up on the shift lever only to realize the sled weight hit the same time as 4th gear. Oh crap. down shift. Too late game over. From hero (aka possibly winning) to zero aka (not even placing.)

Ben you may well be able to pull 4th with the twins. I am just talking to the stock/2.5/2.6 crowd.

I wonder what the ratio is on a zf6 in 4th or 5th lo. On really loose tracks I can pull 5th and seem to do good. But I often wonder if staying in 4th would be better.

Hero gear is easy to get with a stock charger and 500hp. i did it all the time.. but with a big charger that lites at 2700 rpm does not like the drop in RPM's at all especially with 3.73 gears..... But it never fails, I always find a time where i think i need another gear, usually it is not for good benefit...

You were pulling 4low 4th gear with 500hp and 3.73s? What size tires?

IDK what he's smokin because a guy that beat him a fare amount ran 3rd most of the time and beat him with stock turbo compared to the aurora 4000 he had. If he had a decent tune, his big charger would have no problem taking 4th and spinning out with it unlike now.
