4hi 1st is similar to 3rd 4lo. It puts alot more stress on the drivetrain. Go with the gear reduction of lo and save some parts.

Ive seen a few trucks pull in 4hi. A couple gas trucks I saw didn't move the sled and one actually broke a yoke trying to move it. A Ford Powerstroke that tried to go in 4hi made it about 150 feet and stopped with his engine still revving high but no tires spinning so im assuming his trans wasn't doing to well. My younger brother has a 2wd dodge 1 ton that hes going to pull with a few times but it has 4:10 gears and its a manual so it should work.

why is 4th called hero gear

I think Tomac might have coined that term years ago (not 100% sure), but it's in reference to trying to be a hero. As many have found out, 4th gear and stock turbo power (even slightly bigger than stock turbo power) do not mix well. There is not enough power made by the motor to overcome the mechanical disavantage of 4th vs 3rd gear. Those that have north of 550RWHP and 4.10's might be able to do it on the right track/sled. Even the guys that are making 700RWHP+ have gone to 4.10's.....

My personal experience with it was being a test hooker and running 3rd gear pretty much against the rev limiter to a pull of 285'. Chose to reject the pull and try 4th as I was on the limiter in 3rd. Tranny shifted to 4th, RPM's dropped SEVERELY, and I only managed 249' :spit::eek:hgeez:.

Needless to say there is a huge jump in power needed from hitting the rev limiter in 3rd and being successfully able to "hang" 4th gear.

A light sled, crappy tires, wet track may change that a little, but for the average conditions it takes some serious NUT to be able to run 4th till the end.
