EFI Live is the best all around setup to get. But, maybe something like a PPE tuner will be good for you then. You must take it easy on a stock tranny or you will be rebuilding it.

You could load a ~75HP tune and be ok for a long time.

With EFI live we can build you a couple good tunes that will be good for towing and playing. Also leave you plenty of room for changes later. The duramax causes a snowball effect on most and custom tuning gives you many, many options. I can get you setup when ever you are ready and you will be very happy. Just shoot me a PM if you would like more info on what I can provide you and prices. Also LBZ switchable tuning is in Beta testing right now, so theres a good chance soon you could have your tunes switchable on the fly.

X3 on EFI Live. On the Duramax (especially for the price that they charge for other decent tuners) EFI Live is the best option there is. You will never outgrow it and you don't have to be intimidated by writing your own tunes. Most vendors (myself included) include free tune(s) to get you started and offer custom tuning based on your modifications. On a stock transmission you can safely add 100hp over stock for everyday driving, once you have a built transmission and a lift pump you can be tuned up to 530+ rwhp.

If your gonna just play some and tow alot a transgo jr shift kit and a PPE standard tuner and a FASS or air dog lift pump will be all you will ever need cause the 225 tune on the PPE will through a code when you run your fuel rail dry, I had this setup for about a year worked great for towing and works real good street racing from light to light but EFI Live guys will pull away from you when they hit 3rd gear.
But for me I got this drag racing and sled pulling bug and went to EFI Live to get the max power out of truck but efi live can cost alot and be very confussing when you start out but PPE is pretty simple to figure out just plug and go

I would go with EFI-Live but PPE is good also as it is a canned tuner.

I am leery on any tuner and or hard parts for the trany off eBay. If it is yes a Transgo Jr. kit I would make sure it is the right kit and not opened.
