Hey guys, I'm trying to help out a family friend with a stock lb7.

He was getting dicked around by the dealerhsip pretty bad before he got a hold of me, his truck was running fine but making oil like crazy. It had 185k on the clock. I came over and logged his balance rates and to my suprise they really weren't bad at all. the worst was like 3.8x on cylinder 5 and the rest were 0-1.xx and one 2.xx.

I felt pretty confident with the miles on the truck and the fuel in the oil to tell him he needed new injectors. The dealership already had him install a new Cp3 and some other crap that he didn't need.

Anyway long story short he calls me up last night and tells me he did the injector swap and now it's not making oil anymore but it's running like crap and smoking white at idle, but smooths out at cruising speeds. I'm going over this afternoon to run the scan tool and see what I can come up with.

Since I have an LLY and don't need to deal with this stupid injector crap :hifinger: I figured i would get your guys take on what he did/has wrong. He says he bought the injectors new and not used. Though they're probably remans... He's also has done this install before (the first thing the dealship told him to do was take out the sticks and clean them! :( ) and not had this issue so I assume he probably did the install right.

Thanks

Smoking white could either be an injector cup that partially lifted and is now burning coolant, or maybe forgot a copper sealing washer under the injector?

I'll take a wiff when I get there and see if it's coolant thats burning or diesel that isn't.

That would show up on a balance rate test though becuase that cyclinder would be down on compression no?

Balance rate test without taking into account the fuel rate is pointless. Just did an LLY and the ONLY injector out of spec on the balance rate check was #2, yet that was the only GOOD injector in it. The kicker was the fuel rate at idle was showing -2.3MM3 of fuel. As for the white smoke, sounds like he lifted an injector cup. you have to be VERY CAREFUL when pulling the injectors out to keep from disturbing the cups, and even then your rolling the dice. Also make CERTAIN he used BOSCH injectors ONLY! theres still some places out there taking junk cores and slapping new DTECH tips on them and selling em as remans.
