Not a new idea, but something I'm considering setting up next year for kicks.

OK, you get a fairly level field.
Same weight, height, need a scale.
Needs a "timing light" - Chain has a "flag (probably a thick plastic 2'x1' plate)" hanging in the middle, beam aimed at the flag. This is to prevent "jumping". If the beam is broken before the starting lights, jumper loses. Trucks continue to pull until beam is interupted by the losing truck bed. Cost of equipment perhaps $3000 including scale, lights and chain. Equipment could be shipped or carried by pickup to events.

Rounds are run in elimination fashion.

Advantages:

2 trucks run at once. More runs.
Less room required.
Can be run on asphault if necessary.
More entertaining.
Makes it "personal"
Hanging weights isn't required.

No, it would not replace sled pulling, but could be done on shorter notice without a sled at diesel events that would otherwise not have a pull. More entertaining than burnout contests with slightly less damage to tires. Big HP wouldn't necessarily be the ticket. Clever setup and driving would be.

The problem with impromptu bumper pulls, is they are seldom done on equal footing. Weight and hitch height will usually determine the winner if they aren't equal. And whoever gets the "jump" if the other guy isn't ready can give a good advantage. A rolling tire has more traction than one sitting still.

My buisness partner and myself were board last weekend and decided to hook up the 04 Lb7 sb ex-cab, to the 05 LLY cc sb. The 05 pulled the 04 twice right in a row. I was driving the 05 and wanted to yank him down the road a 100' or so but I could not pick up much speed pulling him backwards with out the front end hoping so I kept letting out of it every 10' or so. To bad Im on the east coast you guys got all the cool diesel events out there.

Not always the case. We have several guys in the area that don't have the power to race or pull a sled (Fords and Dodges :D) so they always resort to hooking bumpers. First guy to spin, normally loses on asphalt.

Sounds like a quick way to break drivelines and hitches to me if done on ashpalt, but on dirt or grass-that would be a good time.

Dirt or grass you usually just dig in and no one really moves unless it is that lopsided of a matchup.

Yeah the drivetrain hates hooking on the street. Always fun to watch though!:D

But its the only way worth doing it:D Actually cement might be good also, limited traction but your not digging holes either.

There is alot of that kind of pulling going on around here lately. They even poured a cement pad at the fairgrounds so they can have them there a couple of times a year.

And you will be amazed at what some of these guys will do to there trucks.

Just throwing in my 2 cents worth on possible Dmax probumper pulling setups. Dont use 38x15.50 tires on asphalt if you still have an IFS front end  I always break tie rods off in the steering knuckles or pull them out of their socket.
