Not a new idea, but something I'm considering setting up next year for kicks.
OK, you get a fairly level field.
Same weight, height, need a scale.
Needs a "timing light" - Chain has a "flag (probably a thick plastic 2'x1' plate)" hanging in the middle, beam aimed at the flag. This is to prevent "jumping". If the beam is broken before the starting lights, jumper loses. Trucks continue to pull until beam is interupted by the losing truck bed. Cost of equipment perhaps $3000 including scale, lights and chain. Equipment could be shipped or carried by pickup to events.
Rounds are run in elimination fashion.
Advantages:
2 trucks run at once. More runs.
Less room required.
Can be run on asphault if necessary.
More entertaining.
Makes it "personal"
Hanging weights isn't required.
No, it would not replace sled pulling, but could be done on shorter notice without a sled at diesel events that would otherwise not have a pull. More entertaining than burnout contests with slightly less damage to tires. Big HP wouldn't necessarily be the ticket. Clever setup and driving would be.
