The El Camino was a worthless piece of shit when it came out in '59 and has continued the same course. WTF did it do well guys? You could not haul anything; 2 shopping bags and it dragged ass. Hop it up and you had no traction without big money for suspension. It did not handle worth a shit and you couldn't screw in the front and only seat. None of them were competetive at the drags no matter what engine. The ALL looked lame. Bet the new one handles.;):D
You guys can pine about the old '64 an'd 65 pirce of shits all you want. You never drove them. I did. I also drove the original buck board. It was a piece of shit too.:D

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I used to call them "truck-cars" (and I called vw beetles 'putt-putt cars') when I was 3 or 4.

Bah! The Elky's were legendary. And just like any legend, there was a lot of hype associated with it. All it was, was a Chevelle with a bed instead of backseat (or Impala or Chevy II depending on year), so had all the failings of their parent.

You could carry 500lb in the bed, IF it was in front of the axle. Or tow about 2500lb. Not both, just one or the other.

Like many classics now, Elky's are fetching more now than when they were new, even in average condition.

I always thought a Dmax in an Elky would be the killer ProStreet truck for diesel competition.

Some of us are stuck in our old ways and can't let go of the pagan beliefs. :p:D
I like your description of the 500lb in front of the rear axle. I always put my 2 shopping bags behind the axle ( easier to load ) and pumped up the air shocks to help keep the chrome on the rear bumber.
The EC was down right scary on the freeway above 75 mph, but, for someone that regualarly rode a Kawasaki 500 on it's rear wheel over 100 mph on a regular basis; I defer. :baby::rolleyes::D:hug:
Pat

He still reminds me, I made him sell the one he had, that sat in the garage the entire time I have known him four years ago when me moved:eek:

Beg to differ.... I loved that car. You're right about suspension... Put any kind of decent power out and wheelhop was suddenly your best friend. Get the car dialed in right though and it would knock the piss out of anything... in a straight line :D

It hauled both bags of groceries fine, minimal bumper drag....wait... what bumper?!? :joker::D

The only thing I hated was the 4 wheel drum brakes. That was definately a waste of material.....

I'm gonna hold my tongue on the buckboard... Havent had the opportunity to run one of those though.:D

Must have been a special car to let it sit for 4 years.:D

It was damaged in a fire when I lived in Lake Elsinore. The fire dept wouldn't let me drive it out the garage, then they axed through the roof right above it to kill the embers of the upstairs fire. They dumped about a ton of glowing wood embers on it. It didn't catch fire, it was baked and sauteed. :D

Kinda sucked because it had a new engine, trans, tires, dual exhaust, brakes, etc. The 327 and Powerglide was replaced with a 350ci/TH350. It looked and ran like brand new, except needed some TLC on the rear bumper. Probably would have fetched 10k at least if the FD would have given me 2 minutes to drive it out of harm's way.

So it sat waiting for me gather up parts for it.

cough, cough... I think it looks alright. Maybe most real truck owners, people here, see these as a truck wannabe and thus inherently hate them? Not overly practical w/o rear seat to hold groceries or girlfriendS. Better off with a Subaru WRX, then stuff with their upcoming boxer diesel? At least it has a back seat.

it's not going to work in the States. The GTO is a good "bang for buck" car but it's the same car with a different badge. If they didn't figure it out from the GTO, I give up on them. The G8 is a sweet piece. I wanna get my ol' lady one too.......
