CORONA, Calif. - Two private planes flying about a mile from an airport collided Sunday, killing at least four people and raining debris down on car dealerships below, authorities said.

The small Cessnas collided at 3:35 p.m. near the small Corona Municipal airport and a freeway in Riverside County, about 45 miles southeast of Los Angeles, FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said.

Three of the dead were from the planes and the fourth was in a car hit by debris on the ground, Kenitzer said.

Debris fell on car dealerships, and television pictures showed that the smashed fuselage of one of the planes landed atop a parked car.

"The smaller aircraft ... just disintegrated into pieces, maybe fifty pieces coming down," eyewitness Jeff Hardin told KABC-TV. "The other aircraft pretty much stayed intact and started spiraling down."

Eyewitness Hector Hernandez said he saw bodies falling from the sky.

"One of them crashed into the top of a Ford Mustang, and another one fell not too far behind that one on the parking lot," Hernandez told KCBS-TV.

Police were going through the dealerships to see if anyone was injured, Corona Police Sgt. Jerry Pawluczenko said.

I don't think that airport had a control tower:eek:

i don't think it does either as it is a small single runway airport if memory serves me correctly. the airport designator is KZ with one runway that has runway 7&25...almost an east/west runway. def. small as the runways "paved" area is only right at 3,200' long.

I took flight lessons out of Corona.

There are a lot of foreign student pilots there, and it is uncontrolled airspace, a recipe for disaster.

The accident happened in the traffic pattern, probably the downwind leg.

My guess is that a plane was going to Chino Airport (controlled) and the plane had his radio set to Chino. He crossed the pattern for Corona and T-Boned a plane in the pattern.

Just a hunch though.

Any names?

I know you're going fast and all but you think you would see it coming? Also, if it was a T-bone, arent planes going e-w supposed to travel on even #'s of elevation and N-S on odd #'s? Or it could be the other way around? I'm not a pilot but I (did stay at a holiday in express!) have a friend that I rode a few times with after he got his license and I thought thats what he told me?
