Piston Ring Spacing

I have a question regarding where the piston ring's end gap should be spaced. My Haynes manual has the top and second ring end gap 180* across from each other and it has the oil and oil expander ring gap 180* across from each other. They're perpendicular to each other.

The only thing that the sheet that came with the rings states is that the oil ring and oil expander ring should have the end gaps ~1" apart.

Which way should it be done?

I normally space the 3 ring gaps out 120* from each other and the oil ring and expander 180* from each other. I also like to keep any of the ring gaps from the thrust side of the bore. Not sure it matters but that warm fuzzy feeling is nice. .02
