Would it be better to use a bump stop or something? Seems pretty solid and it would slam pretty hard??

No. You want it solid and no slack once the 1" of clearance is taken up. You never feel the 1" travel and there is no slam.

I must be an odd ball. I made mine to bolt up to where the bump stop was and contact the pad on the axle tube.

Im working on building a different better set though.

Look at the pictures I put up on page one. They are the same way. If you notice the mounting plate and bolt pattern...mounts right in place of the factory bump stops which I haven't ran in about 5 years. I run Timbrens in place of the factory ones for greater capacity with heavy loads except will pulling the sled of course. Then it is 1" travel and then solid!

I will say though driving around the pits with it blocked solid especially where its rough, is interesting and feels like your riding in a dodge.

Here are a couple pics of the stops that i built- i tested them out today, and they worked out really well. They bolt in where the stock bumpstop was, so installation and removal takes about 2 minutes. THANKS Steven

I can install and remove mine in less than a minute.

A guy that i pulled with today put a wood block between the bumpstop and spring. Needless to say there weren't really any rules and they didn't look at the trucks. It worked though, between the blocks and the 1000 lbs of tractor weights he pulled 375 feet. I wouldn't suggest trying it though, if they would fall out it might not be fun.
