Phoenix emissions rules

Hey Phoenix guys I need your help, I'm moving to Goodyear next week and I cannot find the information I am after. From your experience being there what do I need to expect when it comes time to smog my truck.

What can I get away with and what will they check... Visual, performance, ect...

I went to smog for the 2nd time in april (only owned my truck 2 years)

They tell you to shut the truck off, tell them the mileage, they open the hood, check real quick for whatever it is they are looking for, then say start the truck up. They have 2 people perform the test (you are in the drivers seat) one guy holds the opacity sniffer device or whatever its called in the exhaust tip. The other person stays at the computer and tells you when to put the pedal down to the floor 3 times. They then get a little q tip and rub it on the smoke device and see how dense the soot is (im not sure) If Its a 40% or less opacity then you pass. Both times I have gone to the smog center, they said that their equipment was faulty and just gave me the pass haha But you can just not go pedal to floor like i did and they wont know any better. I live in scottsdale and thats where I go for the testing, im not sure if all the testing facilitys work the same or not Anyways hope this helps.. Its a long ass post I know!

What do they look for under the hood, mine doesn't look stock...

Do you load your stock tune in for testing? Or just revert to level 1 on the dsp

Mine doesnt look near stock either! My guess would be that they are looking for emissions equipment, but i doubt they know what or where the egr would be on a diesel. They also didn't check under the exhaust for a cat or anything. The first year i smogged the truck I left it on tune 5, back when I had the maf tweeked so it blew a bunch of smoke it still passed, the place really has bad ways of testing for opacity because they always make me go pedal down 6 times because "the test wasnt working as it should" its frustrating, but they give you the pass so oh well.:thumb:

First off, is your truck federal emission or Cali emission?

If Cali, they will be looking for egr under the hood and a cat under the truck. Some places are more strict than others on "they know what they are looking for" so to speak.

If federal, load a stock tune and do just as they say. You will pass every time. I take mine in on the tow tune and pass without issue but federal emissions make that easy.

Mine is federal. I had to test when I lived in cali bit I k new the shop owner so I assumed he just passed me. But I guess you are right there isn't even any emissions equipment.

Is this meet something you guys do every week, sounds fun.

I just went through in Scottsdale with check engine light coming on for MAF issue before new tune. Cleared it just before they tested me and I passed. They did not check under hood or truck but its a 2001 Federal emissions. Good luck I was nervous but after going through I don't think you will have a problem.

All my crap is registered in Flagstaff up north so I cant help, but, It depends on which emission place you go to for the most part. All has been covered pretty much here. Visual and soot tests, no rollers like other states. If it's a federal LB7 I wouldn't worry.

For your truck every year, if it had any emissions device it needs to be intact and you will have to pass under 40% maximum opacity average on an 3 snap tests. Stock when I bought it was 4.5%, second 6.6% last time was 19.0%

My last and previous inspection every year:

Shut down the truck in the building tail end partially outside

Open the hood and do a visual on the engine along with a mirror check of the cat

Start the truck and the inspector looks on the dash for a CEL

Governor test, throttle to floor once hold then release, shut down truck

Opacity test, hook up sniffer tube to exhaust, watch the inspector for directions

Throttle up to governor 3 times as directed

Shut down truck, pay money, pass or fail papers......

Fail=no registration tags for the year

Good info. Pretty simple, not worried at all I figured there was more to it that I wasn't seeing when I was looking online. Since mines an 02 it never had any emissions stuff to begin with so it should be easy.

no, not every week. maybe once a month. with it being hotter, outside stuff doesnt happen as much which dont bother me much, its the humid months that i cant stand

no your good to go. if they give you any kind of crap for no cat or egr (they tried that on me a few years ago) before they enter your vin in the computer, tell them "its a federal emission truck, they never came with them. your computer will tell you that" and you will be good. ive also noticed, if you dont throttle hard enough, the sensor wont read anything and it will make you keep restarting the test. after 4 attempts, you get a directors certificate saying their equipment is faulty and you are good to go till next year. they might try to tell you something is wrong with your truck to cause it but just tell them its never been an issue before and even passed cali emissions.

ive gone in there with a CEL before just to see what they would do. it may be the fact my truck is much higher than most but they never said a thing about it. they dont hook an OB2 scanner up to them at any point so its a ill point anyhow.

from about mid july through septemberish. 95-105* and 80-90% humidity sucks major balls. ill take 115% heat and no humidity all day long, my swamp cooler in the garage atleast still works then

Right now I'm working in the snow even though its 80+*, I have no idea what humidity is where I live its extremely dry.

In an unrelated note what is the cutoff year for gas vehicle testing... I would assume its the 70's when emissions came about but ya never know

1966 and older. out here there is a loop hole though. if you have someone with property outside the emission testing county (maricopa), you can register it there, have your mailing address changed to the address here in town and you dont have to have it emissioned.
