Something that I think makes a technician great is doing work out of his own shop, and doing his own warranty. I know I work for about half of what others around me do on the side, and I warranty my work out of my own pocket. until somebody has to REALLY pay for there mistakes, they don't truly understand what it takes to do it right the first time. I know one mistake on several of the vehices I work on would bankrupt me(Iwork on alot of peoples toys that are worth some big bucks), yet I still warranty my work with pride. When you can find somebody who is willing to say he will eat the bill if he doesn't fix it, chances are you've found somebody who can do it right the first time.

I wish i could say thats 100% truth but it seems to be a hit or miss anymore. Hand shakes dont mean squat, Giving your word on something makes empty promises, and signing a "good" warrenty is a waist of ink. Good referals and research on who your takin your car/truck to seems to be the only way to know your being handled right and that doesnt always work. Everyone is out to make a quick buck anymore and this makes it really hard for these honest guys such as you and others to get business or earn trust between new customers. Good word of mouth goes far, bad word of mouth goes farther.

Shit I just bring them the wheels :spit:

I only bring mine to people i know working at discount. If they aint there, i come back another day. You should see how pissed the guys in the back get when i tell them i want the tires cross rotated, balanced no more than .25oz out, use a a-cone plate to mount it on the balancer, thin wall socket must be used, and air at 50psi. It seems picky as all hell but i worked there and if this aint noted on the ticket, its a good bet it wont be done. I watch them like a hawk too :D

Another like funny (for me) gem...

Buddy came over and asked if I could show him how to change his brakes because one was throwing rust all over the rim...

Both pics are of the same pad....the guys who took off his lift...obviously didn't much attention to the way the pad went on...

This was done by a "Shop"

Thats right there with a guy I saw installing a rubber trans cooler line on his power steering ( pressure side ). I sold him a 1 foot piece of hose and 4 clamps. Saw him roking under hood and walked over to see if he needed help. Then I saw what he was doing and tried to stop him. He told me to FO. He then started engine and I watched for a second. The hose began to blow up like a balloon. I ran. It let go but not before it swelled to about 4 inches in diameter.:roflmao: he took a bath.:D

I went to work at a Volvo dealership in the late 90s witn NO shop experience with the exception of mine at home.
I was told I would receive 6m training and go to classes in Atlanta before they turned me loose on my own.
I never, ever received formal training, I went to school in Atlanta once during my 3 or 4 years of working for Volvo.

The day I quit Volvo of Charlotte NC is quite memorable for me.........
I did about $3k (Volvo rates) in work on this womans car (very sweet retired schoolteacher).......she rolls in a few days later saying her ac isn't working.......I get the car, blow out the in-car temp sensor and the ac starts blowing ice cold. I am quite happy, told the adviser not to charge her anything and send her on her way.

2 hours later, I see her car is still in the parking lot.........I asked why it is still here?

UNFNBELIEVABLE WHAT SHE TOLD ME..................
The boss said to let her "cook" awhile then charge her two hours labor!!!!!

I swear to y'all I got PISSED! I literally went and told that lady what was going on.......went to my bay and packed my shit. Somewhere in there I told Perry to shove this job up his **!

I will never, ever understand how folks that do that sort of stuff can look in the mirror!!!

I trust dealerships about as much as I trust a crackhead to watch my dog!!

BTW, yes I was already fed up with their bs.

OH that is another entire set of can of worms.... Dealers that love to take advantage of a females because they think they are ignorant:mad:

The last time it was tried on me was several years ago. I took my Silhouette to have the O2 Senor replaced. Told the service writer exactly what was wrong and it should have been replaced under warranty. Picked it up the next day and threw the CEL before I left the driveway of the dealership.

Took it back to our shop and Pat hooked it up to the LS1edit and it was still throwing the same code. Drove right back to the dealer and told them to actually fix it this time instead of resetting the light  Took the laptop with with me. They tried to tell me I was FOS and didn't know what I was talking about. Asked if they would like to come out to my minivan and look at the computer showing exactly what code it was throwing and the meaning. I got the  face.

Next day when it was ready I was so pissed I sent Pat to pick it so I didn't beat them with my broom :witch:

Needless to say Pat was in charge of taking the vehicles in for repair until a couple of years ago. Now I just go harass Robert in his service bay while he fixes them

One of strangest thing I have ran across was on a Toyota Paseo. My brothers Fiance's ride. She brings it to me since she knows I work on stuff for a hobby and he is in another state. I test drive the car and it needs a brake job. Do my typical walk around pulling hubcaps, when I pull the rear passenger side, to look at the lug nuts and see them installed with the self centering cone on the nuts (yes all of them) faced out?????????? WTF?????? I asked who the last people to work on it were to find out it was when she had the tires installed.
