Anyone use 50/50 Acetone and ATF as a penetrating oil? i read in Machinist Workshop that it was by far the best stuff to use to break loose bolts and nuts... im trying it now on my up pipe bolts

this is the article i read on another forum

The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and tranny fluid!

apparantly guys that have the April/May 2007 issue in hand say the magazine made a huge typo and in fact they used Power Steering Fluid/Acetone 50/50 not ATF

Im a rough nevada boy. I gave up on penetrating oils and broke all my knuckles the first time so now I can just thrash those puppies
But that is interesting stuff itd be nice to find something that really worked well.

Update:

after spraying down my up pipe bolts with the Acetone/ATF mix and removing them i noticed that about 3/4 of the way down the bolt threads they were coated in the ATF so i would say this worked as it took minimal effort to break them free

what is the flash point? The benefit of the liquid wrench, kroil et al is the high flash point, you can spray it on hot parts without worrying about losing your eyebrows.

good question... i have no idea it sprayed it on right after the engine was up to operating temps and i didn't experience a single problem.

Ohh okay, just alittle unclear.

I'll have to give it a shot

I would think ATF would work better anyhow, Its slick oil forsure
